Vale Brian Walsh

Post: # 974196Post L.A. Saint »

Yesterday St Kilda and my family lost one of the great unsung players in Brian Walsh to a long battle with illness.
Uncle Brian played 129 games between 1956 and 1964.
He was part of a great back line that included Verdun Howell.
Injury cruelly cut his career short, just a couple of years before our infamous Premiership year of '66.

You will be greatly missed Brian.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Auntie Jenny and the family.

Sad news.
He was just before my time of watching games.

But Finey gave him a big wrap the another night after a caller advised of his illness...

Great Saints player and also a great player at my other club, Ormond. Will inform the Ormond coach today.

By all accounts, was a terrific defender.

Very sad to hear about the loss of another great Saint (that's 2 in about the space of a week now). Condolences to your family L.A Saint.

P.S. Didn't Brian never actually kick a goal for the Saints, but got credited with an "own goal" against Carlton?

Sad news, a very underated payer was Brian Walsh. Classy half back flanker and reliable back pocket player. Often called upon to shut out such champions of the day as Jack Clarke, Bobby Skilton and did it with great aplomb......... a true grit defender.

RIP

maybe you're not as bad as many here would have us believe P66!!.....
having played for the great 'Monds and all!!

Yep he was a good'un was Walshy and a thorough gentleman too

And from another who bled for the old brown&blue, I loved watching him in the back pocket as a young bloke down at the Junction, very solid and reliable although his shoulder wasn't and it kept popping out on him in later seasons
He wore the No 7 with pride and distinction as a fore-runner to the likes of Trotty, Elvis and now the great Lenny

A very sad loss for both clubs and not such "a hot time in the old town tonight" round Ernie Gunn Reserve

my thoughts go to the family

Infamous! I'm sure you mean famous, only Collingwood supporters would refer to it otherwise.

I saw No 7 from 1956 to 1964 play many a game, almost always wearing the long sleeves. Safe, dependable and determined are three descriptors I would apply to him.

He played the 1964 season and was about 30 when he left the club after playing the last game of the year, in which we beat Geelong, the last home game at the Junction Oval before moving to Moorabbin. Rodger Head took over his role in the back pocket in the first game of 1965, and the rest is history - famous history!
