…and why can’t we?

Fair enough LTS, but I think they may have a point in general.longtimesaint wrote: ↑Tue 29 Mar 2022 12:49pm Look at round 21 last year when we were fired up and they weren’t

Re: Why do Sydney always turn up to play?
Because their leaders in Parker, Kennedy, Franklin, Heeney & Rampe play consistently with passion and the kids just fall in line. We simply dont have that standard of leadership. Steele is a very good player but seldom does things that inspire the side, Jones is capable of lifting the team but is inconsistent. Membrey is a barometer up forward but taller marking opponents can shut down his influence. ATM Sinclair is probably our stand up guy that we can rely on in all situations.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Tue 29 Mar 2022 12:22pm …and why can’t we?

Good point.
Guess I am trying to ferret out the coach or the players thing. Watson and Lyon says players.
We lack leaders.
I suppose Hill, Hannebery, Ross and Hannas were great hopes.
They are all for different reasons - some unfair or unlucky - just not leaders.
Ryder is often injured and has been absent, but as a senior citizen Ruckman, it’s hardly to be expected that he’ll be a role model for younger players.
Maybe Crouch can be the guy?
And all those players that have not come on - Bytel, Billings (didn’t realize he’s played so many games) and a few others, perhaps they are not getting gather right juice. ?
And there are some like Kent and Long, especially Long who might have that gangbusters mentality to inspire but haven’t or can’t deliver consistently.
Ah well, hopefully some leaders will emerge.
Hunter C ? What about him? He’s got the class.
Geary has obviously faded, but he wasn’t exactly Patrick Cripps in the first place…a sold citizen though.

Re: Why do Sydney always turn up to play?
They have a remarkable culture, one that is increasingly perpetual, and engrained in the fabric of the club.
They're either in contention to win flags or putting maximum development into players capable of winning flags.
They're the benchmark for consistency. They put all the framework in place to develop players and work harder than anyone else to create a team-first ethic - even when they've got one of the all-timers on their list, you can tell he can't get enough of the Swans' culture.
Speaks volumes. Amazing club.

First they stole Plugger from us then Big bad boofhead , then that turkey from the Crowlice and when that wasn't working out stole Buddy from the Hawks. All with the help and blessing of the AFL,
How long before they try and steal King? I'm betting at the end of 2024 or the start of 2025.
Yeah, amazing club.

Top it off with superior recruiting, better development and prudent list management and you have yourself a solid club.

They say the first 6-8 weeks sorts out ‘who is who’. Well then, they play two (edit: three) games out of Sydney in the first 8 (edit:9) weeks. Surely that is remarkably nice for them.
Notwithstanding their excellent culture.

What’s the criteria for deciding “always come to play”?
We’ve smashed them twice in the last 2 years.

Re: Why do Sydney always turn up to play?
Fluffed their lines in most recent elimination final. GWS caught them out in first half and didn't need to score a goal in the last. So not always.
And often we do turn up to play. But not always. So similar to Sydney.
Sydney have done wonders with Tom and Paddy though, would be interested in why that is and we didn't. Well in regard to Tom in particular (is it possible AR was a poor judge or played favourites?).
The Paddy situation we handled as well as possible I think and the Swans were on a win to nothing picking him up. Hope it ends well although don't want him playing well against us. Waiting to see him in a number of consecutive ground ball pressure situations or being caught under the ball rather than standing off opponents and running in. Still has great hand eye coordination and a lovely kick when not under pressure or kicking for goal. Good to see him happy and well. Hope he always has a soft spot for the Saints when they turn up.

Re: Why do Sydney always turn up to play?
On the other side of the coin:
If they're so great why aren't they still based in Melbourne?
They had an 73 year premiership drought.
They had a 51 year Grand Final drought.
They had a 51 year finals victory drought.
They nearly folded in 1992 and the rest of the teams voted to keep them in the league and for the AFL to fund them.
They had COLA for years so that they recruit star players.
They have very good players now, but still haven't won a flag for a decade.

Re: Why do Sydney always turn up to play?
Just more unsubstantiated football mythology. The media get a mindset about a particular club, and nothing will shift that pattern of thinking, despite the lack of real evidence.

What are you lot talking about?
Sydney have been extremely consistent ever since their first turbulent roller coaster years up in Sydney. But from say ‘95-‘96 ish until now, they have been a beacon of consistency. Coaching continuity A1, regular finals appearances A1 grade. How many times has their percentage been below 100?
St Kilda is like a yo yo compared to Sydney.

Please tell Lyon and Watson to stuff Sydney's academy up their arse. Maybe then they might realize/admit that the northern clubs have an unfair advantage FFS.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Tue 29 Mar 2022 12:22pm …and why can’t we?

Re: Why do Sydney always turn up to play?
Not sure if it was 2 consecutive 6 day breaks or the Buddy Hangover, but they didn’t turn up last night…nearly pinched it in the end
I went with a Swans supporter last night. The one thing I noticed with both teams is the lack of long bombs into forward 50. Sure, there were a few but it was something they avoided, rather than what we dish up most of the time.
