Ruck Strategy

Post: # 1961776Post B.M »

FWIW

Here’s is how I’d play it

Ryder
Strengths
Centre Bounce, forward 50 stoppage, kicking at goal, forward craft

Marshall
Strengths
Around the ground and follow up, stoppage clearances at ball up, contested marking

My take

Ryder - start every game in Centre Bounce and as soon as he can switch with Marshall who would start forward.
Marshall - start forward and swap with Ryder as soon as possible

Marshall would then play the majority of the game in the ruck - except almost EVERY centre bounce where he would go forward and Ryder would take

Ryder to ruck at forward 50 stoppage while Marshall sets up behind the footy

We need to be able to utilise their strengths better!!!

When either one is resting on the bench - go smaller forward for 5 minutes a quarter

We need to do something, and this sounds like it would be better than the current setup. Marshall can be dangerous inside the forward 50, but he can't really play a forward role. Ryder potentially can.

The only bit I would tweak is resting them on the bench, I'd rest them in our forward line and wait until the opposition have won the ball back and drag 35 players up to the opposition F50 and hope a goal is scored, that gives a ruckman about 5 minutes rest.

They would need a short spell

Ideally not but it would be necessary

Outside of Centre Bounce - I rate Marshall a much better ruckman

Have a read of this article Ryder is not rated in the top in any clearance rankings and the club is 13th for scores clearances and 18th for scores conceded from clearances (dead last).

That is more ago at our midfielders

has been highlighted further by absence of Steele

But all have dropped off

Agreed but it also highlights it doesnt matter how good you think your ruckman is, he cant win the clearance for the club.

You need to have a chat with Ben McGlyn B.M…I think he needs some constructive help!

I agree with Brunswicksainter

I'd be using Paddy as the second ruck and have him mainly playing as a forward.

When RoMa is fully fit, I'd have him as the main ruckman. Even at Centre bounce

I agree with the OP.

I think you rate him as a better more as a ruck-rover than a ruckman, which is fair enough.

A ruck rover?

This is not the 1960s

I'm with BM Roma hardly wins a centre clearance tap but is quite handy at a stoppage or boundary throw in where he can use his strength to out body opponents . Ryders leap is a lot better IMO but lately even if we win the tap we are still losing the clearance so have opposition teams out smarted us or the midfielders & the ruck men are not on the same page ?

Sorry B.M., it is not but you got the reference. He's a very tall unaccountable midfielder. Is that better? At least you've come around to admitting he's no good at Centre bounces & Ryder is the preferred ruckman.

A fully fit Roma and Paddy is a good ruck combination. Roma has a bung leg, and Paddy is clearly not jumping as freely in recent weeks. Our rucks are shot right now and it is one of the reason we are not getting clearances, as well as poor play from the onballers.. Just give Roma a rest and bring Campbell in.

Just saying, why not recruit a couple of effective ruckmen. Rowan is a a classy CHF. Paddy just about spent - and seems to be showing in the early slog of second half of season. Bet they wish they had that Hickey decision to make again.

Our recruiters have patched a lot of holes effectively, but the patches are starting to wear through. Combine mediocre rucks (notwithstanding they are fine athletes and around the ground players) combined with largely mediocre mids its pushing footballs up hill all the time. And when the forward line can't take the limited real chances, well......

Maybe the filth could offer up DeGoey and Grundy as a package and pay a significant part of Grundy's contract, getting two headaches off their hands.
