23 contested possessions

A StK all time record - since that data has been recorded
I believe that the 23 were all balls he took from the ruck and kicked particularly seeing as he only had 28 possessions - so it is hardly 'contested' - two players - one trying to tap the ball to his teams advantage - one just grabbing it and blasting away - in a 50/50 crap shoot

Marshall was not special yesterday - he was selfish (Or had been instructed to ruck that way) - but either option resulted in a very poor ruck performance.

The player on 22 contested possessions (Stewie Leowe) should feel aggrieved (if they cared) - but players like Hayes, Steven, Harvey, Ball, Montagna and Crouch - who also make up the list of 20+ in a game would look at this and ask how RoMa gets contested possessions - it is like breaking a possession record of 55 when you kick in from full back and the opposition kicks 50 points.

24 kicks - 539 metres gained so about 25 metres per kick - yeah nah - and most of them 'headless chook' kicks.

So he took 23 from the ruck + 37 Hit outs

That’s 60 ruck contests he won

I don’t believe that

Says something about the rest of the clearance midfield that he’d feel the need to make the clearance himself. But as you pointed out, there’s a fair possibility he was instructed to do it.

So did his kicks from the ruck contest not count - or maybe they were included in the 37 Hit Outs.

HE TOOK THE BALL OUT OF THE RUCK AND KICKED THE BALL!!! That has to be counted as a kick - he had 24 kicks and 4 handballs - where did the 23 contested come from?

Or did you not see him kicking it out of a ruck contest?

Also - if these kicks were Uncontested - how was that only 7 - he kicked it out of the ruck more than 7 times.

If you take it out of the ruck it’s not a HO

I reckon he did that - dozen times

He took contested marks they are counted as CPs

He also won contested ground balls

The fact he took it out of the ruck and smashed it forward - and it turned over - begs the question- what were our forwards doing?!

They certainly weren’t engaging

The player on 22 contested possessions (Stewie Leowe)
When Stewie Loewe got 22 he would’ve taken a dozen contested marks no doubt.

You know Marshall is having a good day and you know we are a good chance to win in a game when RoMa is taking contested marks

He only got 1 for the day

Wood got 4, Wilkie and Batts 3 each.

Last year I was critical of Brad Crouch when he played a selfish brand of footy

In some games he was outstanding. In some games he had a balance and he looked to dish off by hand.

The problem with RoMa’s game yesterday was that there wasn’t a balance.

I saw Sincs and NWM being ignored when he had the option to give the footy to our better users. That’s what frustrates us

The analysis is, if Marshall had such clearance stats, he playing as a ruckman, what does that leave?

The more useless statistic is Steele because what did he generate with ball in hand (when not tackling)?

How many times did Steele control from the contest either kicking forward (including to 6/6/6) or dishing off to the bypass in space?

And then look at the remainder and their contributions

The pressure put on our defence also charged with rebound is enormous - and without their efforts yesterday we would have lost by 100 points not 5

Some on this site should move on from their obsessions with certain players ad nausea and instead focus on where the problem really is

Then there is the problem that our elite runners are running defensively - the reason being that our midfield do not have the leg speed to chase and pressure and cut lines

So not only can’t they get forward they cannot defend their opposition apart from wrapping a tackle under the ruck contest - so the ball in opposition hands

And 6/6/6 advantage lost

Worms Roxanne worms!!

Let’s look at numbers:

Steele got 30 touches at 76% DE. Marshall got 28 at 50% disposal efficiency. That’s effectively 14 touches for the day

As far as centre clearances are concerned- Steele got 3. Marshall only had 1 cc for the day.

Steele took 6 marks. Marshall had 3

Marshall had a lot of inside 50’s, but more importantly …what happened when he trickled the footy forward?

Marshall had zero SI and zero GA. Steele had 6 score involvements and 1 direct Goal Assist.

Marshall did score more Dream team points
