How bad Richmond?
I dont mind the Tiges and I know this is a saints forum but f@rk me how ordinary do they look?
Still Richo reliant, hiding deledio from a proper mid role (where foley needs support), still shyte defence.....worlds of pain.
I say this to at least caution...we ahd a dream result tonight...next week...possibly Cats...that will tell you something.

They're a team that's really lacking in quality talls, but they've got some good smaller players. It doesn't surprise me that Wallace is trying to turn them into a running team. Brown, Deledio and Pettifer in the forward line will give some lesser teams fits. Until that team gets some real key defenders though (not Polak and Bowden), good forwards are going to have an easy time with their defence.
I still can't believe they gave up a top-20 pick for Jordan McMahon. On the other hand, has any team done less with their early draft picks than Richmond? Most of their best players weren't taken early in the draft.

The most shocking thing about Richmond was their guernseys.
Seriously. What paper-pusher thought that was a good idea? The last thing I'd want blazoned on my chest is "Dick" anything. The big "white tiger teeth" zig-zag stuff on one side, and a small Tiger emblem towards the bottom. That guernsey puts the UG in UGLY.
I was saying to my husband in the first quarter, "I feel sorry for Richmond. They try so hard but they seem to run in place the whole time."
RIGHT after I said that, they showed a close-up of a young lady Richmond supporter in the crowd - holding her chin up and looking quite deflated. I have to admit, we laughed so hard, we nearly peed.
They're a good team, kinda. They just need some tweaking.

Think they should look at Jack Reiwoldt playing CHB. They also have Howatt to come in, who I thought looked like a genuine FB late last year. All very well to have Deledio, Richo, Brown, Polak, Petifer in the forward line. On paper that looks o.k IMO, they need some structure though, to many times they all run to the same spot.
Maybe this year?
Agree Eastern, BIG call IMO. He won their best and fairest. In a way I know what he means, Richo is not going to be around in time for them to be competitive IMO, his retirement may fast track Reiwoldt at CHF, Deledio at FF with a strutcure that works. Honestly though sun tan man should be able to develop this with Richo in the side. They just need some discipline when they go forward or look at playing Reiwoldt elsewhere whilst Richo is in the side.

Howat is a rookie who plays as a running wingman so I am not sure who you mean.rexy wrote:Think they should look at Jack Reiwoldt playing CHB. No it is NOT worth noting.rodgerfox wrote:Probably worth noting that it was Rd1 of the NAB Cup last night.
Takes me back to when Robert Walls was screaming at us to tag Luke Hodge in a back pocket of RD1 in the NAB Cup a couple of years ago.
Praccy match folks. Praccy match.
Everyone knows it ws a pre-season match. Everyone knows it means diddly squat.
The only thing being spoken about is the expectation that Richmond, with their close to best team (only three out) against a Saints team playing rookies, first year draftees, two new ruckmen, and a couple of new players in the colours would be two experienced and powerful.
It was expected that Richmond would want to hit the ground running in 2008 after their dreadful 2007 and the Saints would struggle against a more cohesive senior team.
As it transpired, it was the Saints, who not playing that well, played with a better structure, and skill.
The Saints youngsters made Richmond looked slow (how many times were Richmond player caught holding the ball?), indecisive (due to the defensive structure) and their skills terrible (a combo of both of the above). It was the youngsters and rookies of the Saints who were first to the ball and won many of the one on one contests against higher rated and more experienced opposition.
In the washup it may mean nothing, but you get a gut feeling when you actually go to games as opposed to watching them on TV (not saying you dont go to games RF just making a point). In 2005 and 2006, I felt the Saints were only just going in the intra-club matches and this lethargy hung over into the preseason and early Rounds of the premiership.
Last week I felt the skills and structure of the "red" team, the best i had seen this early in a season for three or four. I got a feeling we looked slicker and better setup. A couple of people I spoke to at the intra-club felt the same way.
Last night I had the same feeling. We looked well drilled and played the game on our terms. Richmond, in contrast, for a team wanting to make an impact early seemed slow, dithering, and sloppy.
We all know it is a preseason, but I saw nothing last night that would make me anxious for the Saints. The same couldn't be said for the Tigers.
Lance or James??

Why would there be that expectation? It's a praccy match. Conversely, where Harvey was going at about 70% last night (as he always does pre-season) the Saints' new players and young guys would be going at 110% - they want a spot.joffaboy wrote:No it is NOT worth noting.rodgerfox wrote:Probably worth noting that it was Rd1 of the NAB Cup last night.

I'd imagine the Saints had a lot more to prove in terms of 2007 than anyone in the comp.
It's worth noting too, that in fairness to Richmond they aren't overly experienced anyway.
It happens every year. February flag favourites pop up, and wooden spoon favourties pop up.
It still amazes me that anyone still correlates the NAB Cup with the real stuff.

GT always makes big calls. this is why he is regarded by many as a wanker.Eastern wrote:Grant Thomas made a BIG call on SEN after the game. He suggested that Richo should have retired at the end of last yr so that the Tiggers can move forward !!
his big calls are always wrong.
Robert Harvey- Simply the best
They stiil have Thursfield and McGaune to add to their defence.Enrico_Misso wrote:And they were pretty much at full strength apart from Coghlan
Polak should have been played at CHB or FB playing on eithier Kosi or G, Rix killed him when he was playing at CHF but they did not move him.
Delideo into the midfield would have been a good move also.

Richmond's problem is Wallace. I think they have the players to scrape a finals berth, but only if they pay off Wallace. Wallace is similar toPagan at Carlton and not a Bomber Thompson at Geelong (with their 2007 turnaround). Better for Richmond to sack Wallace now, than at the stage in a season Pagan got sacked.
