In 1997, Harvey said: "Once you get to 25 you realise there isn't long left – especially when you started at 16. Your body gets such a hammering each week. You wonder how long it can hold up."

I LOVE YOU ROB

Favourite Harvs memory (although there have been thousands) would be the way he won that final V adelaide by himself.

Would only be topped by him holding up the cup in september

Will be missed greatly... He is the reason I love this club and game so much...

A brilliant example of a champion player and individual... In tough situations, I often think, what would Harvey do... makes you think clearly...

Thankyou Harvs.. Goodluck in your future to you and your family...

The living, breathing example of everything a champion should be.

Humble, determined and skilful.

What a wonderful career, we are truly lucky that he is one of ours.

Even though this day has been coming for a little while, how shattering is it??

absolutely spot on!

Everything that I love about the game of footy is encapsulated in Harvs.

He has played 376 games and not once lost his cool. Belted from pillar to post by taggers for years, but he has just kept running and running. Grinding them into the dirt.
No-one has worked harder on bettering their game then this man and he is turned himself from a shy 16 year old school kid training at Moorabbin into the greatest player I have ever seen play the game.

For years the saints would be under pressure and the ball would land in Harvey's hands and you would relax knowing he would do the right thing and we were in safe hands.

It's never quite going to be the same without him running around.
I was 2 years old when he made his debut.

Thanks for the memories Harvs, and thank christ you played for us!

The man from Seaford who went on to become the greatest midfielder ever. The man who inspired Buckley, Ricciutto to become the players they were. The man who had the rotating taggers invented for him - cos no one player could stop him.

The man universally respected across all AFL Clubs and their supporters. So many memories of his greatness - the day GT asked him to tag Shane Crawford at the MCG in 2004?? at the G' - Harvs finished with 41 possessions to Crawf 9!! That's some tagging job!!

He is a legend, a champion of the game. Footy won't be the same when he isn't out there.

I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

the shining light of the dark years
i will always remember watching him at boundry throw ins hunched over like he had been overcome by exhastion only to spring into action once the ball had come back into play a fresh as he was at the start of the game ... the way he would grind the opersition taggers into the ground he invented the Gut Run ...

i personally missed the era's of the greats like Baldock Stewart and Big Carl and was too younge to remember the days of Barker and Plugger in his Prime but i am forever grateful to have been around to witness the greatness of Robert Harvey and will have great joy in explaining to my future Kids and GrandKids the exploits of the 8 time all australian 2 time Brownlow medalist 4 time best and fairest....... long will we remember the Great ROBERT HARVEY

As far as tributes go, I'd like to see the whole saints team run out on the field, round 22 vs Essendon, with the number 35 on every players back.

Would give the commentators a headache, that's for sure :D

I bet I am not the only one who had tears in my eyes just watching him on the Sports news :(

You are the greatest Saint ever :D

As my sig says you are the true king :D

The idea of having just the number 35 on the banner for this weeks game is brilliant, but even better if we have just that for the rest of the games he plays :D

A true king is Robert Harvey.

With Harvey's announcement I couldn't help but feel a large part of my love for St Kilda has been wrenched away. Take a few moments to think about his decision and my love and determination as a spectator to do whatever it takes to watch this 08 squad get him that premiership he deserves so much just grows and will continue to grow with every minute that goes past.

In the recent Saint magazine most of the boys who were asked who their sporting hero was put down Robert Harvey. They should feel just as motivated, if not more by the fact that they know they can actually make a difference. They can do a Luke Ball and sacrifice themselves if it might mean that one little chance at earning a win.

If this doesn't lift you, absolutely nothing will. Do it for him!

Robert Harvey the ultimate ambassador to this great team.

He has set a standard many try but few achieve, not only in playing ability, but in sportsmanship, decency, if ever there was role model, Robert Harvey is it.

It will be the passing of an era, lets just hope we can give it a fitting finale.

If ever this playing group needed an incentive to win it all, this has got to be it.

I am a wrestling fan, and for those of you who are here, you would remember the fitting finale to Rick Flair's career earlier this year.

My wish is that we are all gathered at Moorabbin, Harves is on the second tier of the Huggins stand front and centre with his team mates holding that premiership cup with everyone shouting "Thank you Harvs!"

Harvey... the ULTIMATE personification of the word, 'SAINT'.
Exemplifying the very best you could expect from a footballer and a person.
Humble, Courageous, Skilful.... LEGEND!!

For me, he is the greatest ever.

Best wishes, Banger.

Spot on.

Best player i've seen in my life time.

"Our season is still alive," Lyon said. "It's not the end for Robert."

Harvey's mates stood listening to those words, perhaps planning to keep the AFL's longest career lingering a while yet. Then turned into softcocks and blew it YET again.

My friend who is a diehard Geelong supporter (so I guess I use the word friend loosely!) with no affiliation to the Saints whatsoever said that he'd love the Cats to go back to back, but that he would be almost just as happy to see Robert Harvey bow out of the game in a premiership winning team. That is reflective of the kind of impact Harvs has had not just on Saints fans but right across the footy community. I don't think there's a genuine person around who doesn't respect what he's achieved over the duration of his AFL career.
