Round 1 Team

Post: # 711016Post Quixote »

As rightly suggested in another thread, I believe a STRONG START to this season is imperative.

CONFIDENCE and TEAM UNITY are vital - especially at St Kilda.

Confidence breeds more confidence, which in turn, hopefully, results in arrogance.

I'd love to see a Confident, Arrogant St Kilda team again.

So, just for the sake of the die hards, I'm posting what I think will be our team for Round 1, next weekend.

Keeping in mind, this is before the final hitout for some players in the VFL Praccy on Saturday. I say this only because I hold a little suspicion that Rocco is not far from elevation.

RND 1:

B: Baker Blake R/X Clarke (whoever is 'more right')
HB: Dawson S Fisher Gram
C: Dal Santo Joey Goddard
HF: Gilbert Roo Schnieder
F: Milne Kosi Lynch
Foll: King Ball Hayes

Int: Ray Gardiner Steven Begley

Emg: Geary Mini/Jones Gwilt

Close: Heyne and (hopefully!) Rocco.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't DAwson a rookie? Has he been promoted?

Lynch won't play.

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

Dawson has been promoted.

Who plays in front of Lynch? Only other option is Geary for mine - the team I posted may be top-heavy.

Certainly not Gwilt or Macca, unfortunately.

BTW, I'm assuming these are out injured, or coming back through the twos: Armitage, Maguire, 1 x Clarke, Max, Eddy.

Heyne is probably ahead of Lynch.

If fit both X & R.

Positions I'd argue but other than that probably a pretty good team.

If both Clarke's are fit ( :?: ), Begley out, onto EMG. Gwilt off EMG.

I honestly think Rocco will get his run - whether it be RND 1 or RND 15 - wait for it.

If rocco is getting a game then we aint serious contenders.

So if dawson is in and maguire is not then i assume this would be the team. As for Gwilt... what is everyones problem?? he is top 22 get over it. lynch?? you havin a laugh or what?? he is 18 hardly HF ready!! we are going for a flag not rebuilding.

Gwilt Dawson CLARKE
Dal Santo Blake S.Fisher
Gram Hayes Goddard
Schnieder Rooey Jones
Milne Kosi Gilbert

King Ball Montagna

Gardiner Armitage Geary Ray

emg: X.Clarke, Connors, L.Fisher

Ross is a long way off. May even play a fair few in Sandy seconds this year due to his size. Heyne is no hope either for round one. Look at the last practice match and the few that didnt play that game through rest and injury and that will basically be the side.

Lyon has stated that Tungatulum is a two year project player, so I wouldn't expect elevation for him this year. But it will happen.

Begley Dawson Baker
Gram S Fisher Blake
Montagna Goddard Dal Santo
X Clarke Riewoldt Gilbert
Milne Koschitzke Schneider
King Hayes Ball
Gardiner Ray Geary Steven

Em: Maguire Jones McQualter

Agree that to start with he may be a little raw but where could he be by September if nurtured. If you put in someone else that is ready to go but has little improvement are we going to be any better off come finals time (provided we make it)?

Blake to play on Goodes all day

B S Fisher Z Dawson S Baker
Hb J Steven S Gilbert R Clarke

Hf B Goddard N Riewoldt A Schneider
F N Dalsanto J Koschizke S Milne
R M Gardener J Blake L Ball

Blake should play on Goodes all day got a good record on him reports say Gardener has been our best ruckman in the pre season a very flexi team as all players can play many roles

Yep we are going for a flag, not re-building. Well from what I've seen this pre-season your HFF Jones is not gonna help our chances.

Also, Connors is injured, so doubt he'll be EMG. And L Fisher? Hmm...

Also...

I really hope that Gwilt can have a break-out season. I hope he uses he's experience (3 - 4 years now?), his strong physique, his aggression and his long left foot kick to Step The f*** Up this season. Kick some goals, assert his presence.

However, if he doesn't, I say someone like Lynch should be in the team before him. I liked what I've seen so far - and if he is gonna burst onto the scene, he's got to be playing!! Why does it seem that other teams have first year players smash it up - and some spark! - but we never can??

The counter argument is that team (with Lynch listed above) is too top-heavy. Fair enough, bring in Geary.

Raph in for Begley
Armitage in for Geary
Maguire in for... Zac?
Max in for...?
Steven vs Eddy

My 22 would look something like this

FB: Dawson Blake Baker
HB: Geary S.Fisher Gram
C: Montagna Goddard Ray
HF: Dal santo Riewoldt Schneider
FF: Milne Koschitzke Gilbert
R: King Hayes Ball
I/C: Gardiner Begley Steven Jones
EMG: Maguire McQualter Gwilt

Updated due to injury news...

Not a great looking line up, some pretty important outs...

I thought we were having such a perfect pre-season but all of a sudden we have 4 players out of our best 22 through injury and Maguire having to work himself into the team through Sandy...

If Raph or X aren't good to go then Begley and Baker come in for them.

eddy is still injured...

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that...

How he recovers from this injury is going to be huge for him IMO, because for mine, he is just outside of our 22 and after a stint on the sidelines I'm not sure if he will be able to break back into the team...

How about something different....

B: Baker, Dawson, Begley
HB: R Clarke, Koschitzke, Ray
C: Gram, Goddard, Montagna
HF: Gilbert, S. Fisher, Dal Santo
F: Blake, Riewoldt, Milne
Foll: King, Hayes, Ball

Int: Gardiner, Schnieder, Jones, Gwilt
Emerg: L Fisher, McQualter, Steven

Kosi to go to Hall, Dawson with Grundy.

Blake to track Goodes all day.

Half Forward line to play high up the ground leaving Gilbert and Roo plenty of space to work in.

Possibly bring Jack onto the bench for Gwilt if guys in the middle are underdone.

Pretty Armo isnt playing round one as his brother said he did his hamstring. Also i like Jimmy but if he is playing we are going no where fast and unless Raph this week and probably X neither of them will play either.

Here is my guess

B: Blake, Dawson, Begley
HB: Gram, S Fisher, R Clarke (if fit)
C:Montagna, Goddard, Ray
HF:Gilbert, Riewoldt, Dal Santo
F:Milne, Kosi, Jones
Foll: King, Hayes, Ball
Int: Gardiner, Geary, L Fisher, Gwilt

Emerg:l Stevens, McEvoy, McQualter

Game time in 2's required- X Clarke, Baker, Maguire, Schnieder

L Fisher needs to be rewarded for huge pre season. Injured and interupted pre season need game time in 2's

Won't take him long to get back though. He is pretty isn't he. Obviously didn't get enough fist facials when he was younger.

I've always thought he looks a bit like the guy from the 4400

B: Blake, Dawson, Begley - honest toiler, unknown, unlikely

HB: Gram, S Fisher, R Clarke (if fit) - soft but handy, champ, soft

C:Montagna, Goddard, Ray - good, champ, hopeful

HF:Gilbert, Riewoldt, Dal Santo - not inspiring, champ, needs to step up

F:Milne, Kosi, Jones - inconsistent champ, who knows?, try hard but not up to it!

Foll: King, Hayes, Ball - experienced, champ, hoping he's back

Int: Gardiner, Geary, L Fisher, Gwilt - may contribute, the rest aren't first team players!

Emerg:l Stevens, McEvoy, McQualter - nothing there at the mo.

There's at least one weakness across all lines and a very questionable head and tail of the spine.

Let's hope those that need to, step up this year! And we need maguire, x, ball, and baker back to old fitness and confidence to give the top 2 any competition at all!

UUm yep. Can't wait to watch it on the Big screen at home with a beer in hand. Maybe I shouldn't say that on here, but stuff it. It's the League players that are stuffing up and making people whinge about alcohol in sport. I thought it was an Australian Tradition to have a beer at the footy. Anyone else on that page.
