Glad he's signed for now; an interesting end date, though.

Might have thought we'd give him until the end of 2010, then try to stitch up another two-three year deal to wash over the GC17 period.

Maybe his current contract expires at the end of 2009 and all they've done is sign him up to a new 2 year deal finishing end 2011?

As for Roo, his current contract doesn't expire until the end of 2010 so I imagine there'll be no negotiations until next year.

Anybody know when Armo's current contract (the third of our 'Qlders') ends?

Good move by the Saints. With Gilbert being a Gold-Coaster, he'd have been a prime target for GC17.

Sam Gilbert has put pen to paper on a two year deal that will see him remain with the Club until at least the end of the 2011 season. The 22-year old from Southport, Queensland was selected by St Kilda with pick 33 in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft and has played 40 career games since his debut in 2006.

Why did you say end of 2012

when I posted (confirmed SEN) that it was till end of 2011?

gold coast will be in the 2011 season, correct??

so this keeps Gilbo out of that free grab of any uncontracted player fest that will occur at the end of the 2010 season??!!...

Will they resign Armo or will they wait and see if there is any interest from Scott Clayton and his band of merry men...

Come on, let's give the club some credit where it's due.

Gilbert was always going to be a secondary target for GC should they fail in their attempts to sign Riewoldt. He has now been taken out of the equation for at least their first season. It remains to be seen how he'll go in 2009 but he's started the season in great fashion and if he maintains his current run of form they wouldn't have been the only team interested in his services.

Great move Saints!

Come on, I said I was glad the club signed him for now.

I'd just like to see us keep all our Qld boys or recieve excellent compensation for them, which is more likely to be the case if he has a few contracted years up his sleeve.

No big deal, really.

Gilbert has a rare combination of skills, speed and size. He's going to be an absolute force in the league for some time. I don't think there was ever much danger of him leaving for GC, but any news like this is more than welcome.

An honest question - how many players from the 05 draft would you take before Gilbert now? Murphy? Pendlebury? Higgins? Van Berlo? Gamble? Dale Thomas? Xavier Ellis? There's not many, that's for sure. His development has been a treat to watch. The absolute hiding he gave ROK on the weekend shows his class.

Porp better watch out for him Friday night!

Good question about the 2005 draft... for me it would be
Marc Murphy
Scott Pendlebury
Paddy Ryder
Shaun Higgins
Nathan Jones
Garrick Ibbotson
and
Bernie Vince

I would take him over the likes of Thomas, Drum, Ellis etc. All good players in their own right but don't have the versitility or potential of Gilbo....

So by my ratings Gilbo was the 8th best player of the draft, not a bad slider at all... If only we didn't trade pick 17 for Fergus Watts, then we could have gotten an Ibbotson or a Vince aswell :(

ROBERT HARVEY A.K.A The Great Man, Banger, Harves, Ol' Man River...

congrats in not rating thomas at all...and to think the pies wasted a high pick on a showy pony forward pocket

Wasn't there an article early this year saying we were negotiating with Roo for a contract extension?

Great move by the Saints! Not too worried about Roo at the moment would be a lot of water to go under the bridge before he left Moorabbin.

I'd disagree on Ryder. I don't get the hype with him. He doesn't get the ball and he rarely shuts down any of the forwards he plays on. Tough job in that backline though.

It's a bit of apples and oranges with the rest of them, but I'd take Gilbert over most of the rest. Vince does well in Neil Craig's samey midfield. Jones is a nuggetty in and under player with suspect disposal. Ibbotson has some class about him and had a better 08 than Gilbo.

Pendlebury is insane. He did his damage last week with 63% TOG. Murphy, IMO, is the Daniel Kerr of that midfield. Higgins looks like he's going to be a star. Those are the only three from that list I'd take right now over Gilbert.

I realise that but surely you see the obvious danger in letting him come out of contract at the end of 2010. To be fair to Sam, he could easily have allowed himself to come out of contract at that time which would have put himself in a strong bargaining position for his next contract but instead he's made a strong committment to this football club.

Obviously we don't know what will happen in 2011 but at this stage we've prevented a very promising young Gold Coast product from being claimed as one of the new clubs uncontracted players. Without knowing the terms of the deal it seems to be a smart bit of business by the club.

I agree on Ryder, don't see what all the fuss is about on him. As you point out, he rarely shuts down a key forward, and does not get enough of the ball to be damaging. Extremely overrated.

From that draft, I would take these players over Gilbo:

Murphy
Pendlebury
Higgins
Ibbotson
Vince
Van Berlo

On a par with Gilbo:

Ellis
Thomas
Gamble
Jones

I know it was only an opinion, but

Ibbotson, Higgins and Vince???

Seriously what have these guys done that Gilbo hasn't done???

Gilbo is on par or shaping up better than all these 3 considering his versatility and hardness

Ibbotson has some serious class about him, he seems a real likely type who could become a superstar, he reminds me a bit of Goddard only IMHO he doesn't have the same potential.

Higgins would already be as highly rated as Murphy, Thomas etc. if it weren't for injuries.

Vince is going to be a very good player, Craig has clearly marked him down as a key play maker and is playing him in key roles.

As for Ryder I feel that he is very overrated by Essendon supporters but underrated by the rest of the football community, sure he may not stop the oppositions best forward week in week out but he does his part. Sam Fisher rarely beats a Fevola, Franklin, Roughead, Pavlich but we all still consider him a superstar.

Ryder's strength is his versitility, he can play any key position or on the wing... also let's not forget he is only 21 I would love to have him line up for us...

Anybody know when Armo's current contract (the third of our 'Qlders') ends?

Mr Magic what about the fourth of our Q'landers...................... Maxy!!

Fancy forgetting him   Maybe Saints should sign him on a long term back ended contract like Hamill then watch the 2 weeks, 2 weeks, ad nauseum due date for the resumption of his playing date over the years....we could run a book on it and make some money for sponsoring each years SS players

Don't want our Maxy going to any gold coast team before the Saints have exhausted every little bit of defensive, spoiling ability from his game
