Joffa Cunningham

Haven't seen it mentioned........great to see Bruce Eva bring up Geoff "Joffa" Cunningham to the mike after the game on Saturday night. He now lives up there.

A great team man , in some difficult days ( although he played in the great 1978 team).

For those too young to know, a little bit of CJ, ie. not great on the skills but 100% effort every week. A Ballarat boy, he mentioned Burns etc , but also gave a nod to Gary Odgers.

Interesting comment, dismissed the party team idea for our under performance in the 70s/80s ,more to do with lack of resources/admin etc.

Most clubs in the 70's & 80's were party clubs. The difference was that other clubs had the money (the grandstand repayments at Moorabbin were a constant hinderance) and stability at board level.

We had to sell a number of very good players to keep the club afloat. We also couldn't buy players like the power clubs could.

It's quite amazing the club didn't go under in the circumstances.

I had Joffa's number 5 on my back as kid, he was my hero. Tough and unrelenting.

......was it just me, but he didnt seen to look much different from the day he retired. He is a young 50!

Joffa played for Victoria. He was a damn good wingman. Not the best kick in the world - but good with his hands. Tough as. Played some classic games against the "big names" like Hawkins, Dipper etc.

I remember the day that Joffa played on G Ablett at Moorabbin, the two of them spent all day taking screamers on each others backs, it was incredible, it was like they were trying to out do each other.

He was a groundsman at Firbank and i used to have a chat with him often as i was doing the same sort of job down at Sandy and used to catch up ewith him quite alot. Loved the way he played but more than that he is an absolute gentleman.

Joffa was a genuine hard nut...remember him and Rhyce Jones bashing the bejezas out of each other a few times over the years

Joffa was by far my favourite player until a certain Neil Elvis Winmar happened along. Because of Joff I wore #5 playing footy both at school and at all three clubs I played senior footy (took about one season at each club to graduate to single digits, but made it at all eventually)...

When my husband and I got married, our first dog, a gorgeous collie kelpie cross was named Joffa after Joffa Cunningham.
We now have an adorable aging labrador named Harvey.

This is the game I always tell my boys about. I loved Joffa's efforts, he would have had more than 20 posessions, it was tough, unrelenting play all day, Joff was on fire. He got almost everything.

However, Ablett ended up with about 12 kicks for 8 goals 4 behinds or something like that. He scored with every kick he had It just shows that the footy gods are not kind sometimes.

i reckon he was quite skillfull, more than most , played for the state possibly his kicking let him down occasionaly, he used to hae some great battles on the wing with doug hawkins... we had quite a few hard nuts in those days particuarly from ballarat.

Actually had a couple of beers with him on Saturday night. first time I have met him. Seems like a great guy and loves the earings. Had about 3 in one ear and 2 in the other.

i reckon he was quite skillfull, more than most , played for the state possibly his kicking let him down occasionaly, he used to hae some great battles on the wing with doug hawkins... we had quite a few hard nuts in those days particuarly from ballarat.

His kicking was average at times, although to be fair it's hard to kick when running through two feet of quagmire-like mud... Although Joffa can't really complain about that because he was usually the one watering the ground! Allegedly, of course....

Would could forget this cross-ground pass into the corridor in that famous 1989 game v Carlton, that was chopped off by Carlton and sent forward for a goal, only to have Plugger win the game for us a couple of minutes later.

People forget he was out on his feet after prolly being close to our best after Plugger that day

Have had a few beers with Joff over the years and has told me some great stories, he went through a stage once with the hippie hair , didn't recognize him, lol.
