Silvagni finishing with the Saints at years end

Post: # 963535Post SainterK »

Maybe I'm being picky here, but couldn't we hear this from St Kilda first rather than Mike Sheahan?

Anyways, I am sure he has been instrumental in setting up our defence as the best ever. Personally I wish him well...

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/s ... 5897723522

ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon is losing his confidant and senior assistant Stephen Silvagni.
The former Carlton champion will complete his coaching duties for the rest of the season before starting the next phase of his football life.

It is the second coaching shock for the Saints in only a couple of months, with veteran midfield coach Tony Elshaug quitting without notice mid-season.

"I just think it's time," Silvagni said.

"I've really enjoyed my time here. St Kilda and Ross gave me the opportunity to be a full-time assistant; they've been fantastic."

Asked if he still harboured hopes of coaching in his own right, he said: "I've got some opportunities I'm looking at."

Lyon said his close friend would have happily moved on had the Saints won the 2009 premiership.

"He goes with my blessing; he's been a great supporter to me. He'll do something, but he's not going coaching. I think he's seen enough to know he doesn't want to coach," Lyon said.

"I'll miss him, but it's probably the right time. Four years is about the right length for an assistant."

Silvagni was reluctant to expand on his decision, with the finals just five weeks away. It is not known if the players know of his decision.

What difference does it make? Credit to Sheahan for getting it - he didn't dress it up as a scandal. No fuss. No muss.

Regardless, disappointing to hear he is leaving. Let's hope he can leave Zac as his legacy.

...that is, a vastly improved Zac than the 2010 edition.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Other than referring to it as a COACHING SHOCK and that he didn't know whether the players knew.

Sheahan's as much of a sl*t as the rest of them. He's just older.

That's a shame, he's been great, as far as I can tell. Thanks and good luck SOS, see you at the Port Adelaide shopping centre!

You mean he'll be off the 'tar' and the red wine during video reviews?

I could assume that this announcement has come now to stop any major- will he wont he is he should he about that position

I noted that Tudor has already been named as one possible..

Players almost all sown up now to consolidate the Coaches- and the article certainly 'quotes' both SoS and Ross.

Lets see...

* Blues underachieving...

* Ratten has had a fair crack....

* Mrs Pratt is still tipping in megabucks.....

Who do you think the Blues would target as their next coach?

* Favourite son
* Someone who has been assistant to a top club for a while

Wonder who that may be?????????????????

Yes, some prospect of this given the timing. Why else release this now if not to let the market know he will be available? Yet Lyon's remarks seem contrary to the notion. Perhaps some other role at the Blues?

Bring back MAX ...

Post: # 963577Post WinnersOnly »

Time to bring Max back to the fold ! He has spent a year with Collingwood working on there defence and got a good insight into what goes on with other leading clubs. It would be great for the club to get some of our own back on the coaching panel. That is if Max has forgiven RL for not playing him in the 2009 GF ???

Clearly more to this than meets the eye

Obviously a major rift in our coaching ranks. RL not getting on with the assistants, they are leaving in droves. This threatens to destabalise our season and cost us a flag

Dont listen to the crap spin coming from RL and SS, they clearly have had a massive fight

**Just thought Id get in early before the usual conspiracy theorist rubbish starts lol**

Note that the last line of the newspaper article (and conveniently omitted in the original post) states "He is not expected to return to Carlton."

St Kilda should very seriously look at recruiting Tom Harley as defence coach. He comes from a successful club and has been very impressive with his knowledge of the game in his role as special comments man at Channel 7.

He already has some coaching experience courtesy of his role as assistant coach and mentor at the AIS AFL Academy.

Harves could very well return as midfield coach given that Tony Elshaug quit earlier this season...

Disappointd SOS is leaving, but he's doing the right thing by the club and staying until the end of the year to minimise disruptions to the finals campaign.

Also, giving plenty of notice and going with RL's blessing...can't really ask more than that after 4 years of excellent service.

Tom has already signed with GWS as assistant to Sheedy (or defensive coach anyway)

Tom's role with GWS is as a part time "Project Consultant"

A Carlton supporter friend of mine has been saying for the past few weeks that they should get SOS.

I told him they'd be better off going for Choco Williams than a favourite son.

Anyone who knows SOS or the family would know this has been coming for some time.

He took a fair bit of convincing to sign on again after 2008 when his original 2-year contract was up, and his loyalty to Lyon was the decisive factor.

He would have moved on if we'd won the flag last year.

He's been absolutely fantastic for this club, and make no mistake ... if he wanted to keep coaching at assistant level, he would sign on with the Saints in a heartbeat.

He wants more time with his kids and family, and wants to pursue other things ... no doubt he will be involved in football in some way.

The Saints are losing a great person, and a great coach ... and let's not forget, he would never have spent four years here if it wasn't for RL in the first place.

Good luck SOS with your endeavours post-2010, and fingers crossed the Saints can find a suitable replacement.
