GOOD FRIDAY Footy? !!

Post: # 1064375Post Eastern »

It's a debate that hapens on here and many other places at this time of year. There are always going to be differences of opinion on this topic but we should respect and not condem those whose opinion is different to our own.

My thought is that we should get ourselves a partner and go for it. For what its worth I'd go in this order; Richmond, Carlton, Geelong, Melbourne. That could ensure that it was played at the G and keeps Essendon & Collingwood (who both want everything) out of it. I'd like to see it as a game that starts at 3.40 so that it doesn't interfere with any religious committments or the Good Friday Appeal. I would also like to some sort of religious acknowledgement as part of the pre-game ceremony and of course there would be a joint arrangement between the clubs and the afl that ensures that the Good Friday Appeal gets a boost out of the game.

My biggest fear is that Essendon and/or Collingwood will grab this and create a larger gap between the haves and have nots amongst the Victorian based clubs. Its there for someone to grab and turn into their own BLOCKBUSTER (cash cow), and if we don't someone else will

Thoughts? !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Should be us vs the Demons.

I'ld go, just for the s***s and giggles.

Oh and ANZAC day is far more significant than good Friday, I'ld prefer games today and none Then.

You're right stinger, I don't respect those who believe that the day is sacred. May as well not play football because it is Winnie the Pooh's birthday.

And before someone has a crack, I feel the same way about all religions

... this sacred of sacred days.....the afl agrees...
Andrew Demitriou is charged (I'm not sure who by...) with running the competition for maximum profit - 'growing the game'. The fixture, the tribunal, the commission are all geared towards this end. Yet he decides that the competition will not reap the rewards of a definite 'blockbuster match because of his own personal religious views.

It's a fiefdom.

Australia has a significant christian history but christianity has a limited relevance to many today. It's time to become the truly secular society that this nation was always supposed to be. And watch AFL footy on a christian religious day.

The religious should stop worrying about what the rest of us do and start making sure that their organisations start actually contributing...

"Pooh’s birthday date is a matter of some confusion.
It is widely accepted that since Winnie-the-Pooh was 1st published on 14th October, 1926 by Methuen therefore this date is Pooh’s birthday and is officially recognized as the day when Pooh celebrates his birthday.
In some sections it is thought that since the Pooh teddy bear was presented to Christopher Robin Milne on his first birthday i.e., 21st August, 1921 therefore Winnie-the-Pooh celebrates his birthday on this date."

how ironic

I'd love to see a game of footy played on Good Friday. We would then have something interesting to watch on the big screen at our annual "Festival of the Cow" celebration.

Strange time. The only religious rites I remember from my youth began at 3pm on Good Friday.

Should be a night match. Those that don't want to go or watch on tele are free to meditate, pray or whatever it is they do.

I am a believer on the events of today, however I would have no objection to a game being played on Friday night as per normal, especially if it we're tied in with the Good Friday Appeal.
I actually believe it would be great PR for the AFL if it was done properly.
Half the gate takings to the appeal, the teams share the other half, and as Eastern said a tasteful reminder for those who believe what today is about, not what dished up by Betfair yesterday, but, there is freedom of speech and free will.
Actually, Easter is held now because it ties in with the Jewish Passover festival which is what the Last Supper was, the passover meal which the Jewish faith remembers when they we're delivered out of bondage from Eygpt.
The Solstice is on or around the 20th March which is when the sun rises and sets 12 hours apart, which here means the start of Autumn, not the convenient 1st of March, and in the northern hemisphere the start of Spring.
I do believe in it because I just think there has to be more to life than just creating new generations and preserving the species. That there is a higher plain of existence and that there may be life forms out there far older and wiser than us.

No probs. We'll all have Secular Nation Day and you can use an annual leave day to celebrate your personal religious beliefs.

Luckily he's not muslim. Or we'd have to call off all matches in August.

I don't think Andy would get the same level of support if he decided that AFL would be played on Greek easter. Or Diwal. This is the best result he can get.

As a Roman Catholic who couldn't give a toss I say it's time the AFL played on Good Friday. I'm not going to church...I'm hanging out for the footy and the Easter Bunny.

Isn't amazing how so many here talk about respecting other people's cultures and customs, yet when it comes to today don't respect the beliefs of christians.
All they do is make snide remarks and denegrate our beliefs, so much for tolerance.

Bollocks. It's a public holiday whether or not you are a christian.

Why a secular nation day?
The last census said 12 million Australians defined themselves as Christians.
Thats more than half.

Annual leave for you but not the footballers , right?

So what you're saying is you want the holiday (born from Easter) but footballers cant have it. they must entertain you because youre bored(ing).

Play with the kids.
Go on a picnic.

Dont be bored. lol
