Saints Super team since 1980

Post: # 1093568Post MrCordz »

Nice way to compare our current list is to work out how many would be in our team of the last 30 years (maybe this has been done before here but here's my effort: - All players assumed to be at their peak whilst at St. Kilda.

B: N. Burke Max Hudghton Steven Baker

HB: T. Barker Sam Fisher B. Goddard

C: N. Winmar L.Hayes G. Cunningham

HF: A. Hamill N. Riewoldt L. Montagna

FF: S. Leowe A. Lockett S. Milne

R: J. Sarau R. Harvey N. Dal Santo

INT: G. Burns B. Hall F. Gehrig A. Jones

Apologies: F. Coghlan, L. Ball (no i'm not sorry actually), J. Dunne,
P. Everitt.

We may struggle with the salary cap however

Out Sarau.

In Spider.

He may have been a d1ckhead, but was one of our best ever ruckmen.

Not at CHB I wouldn't think.

But then again I would think he was a better FB than Max.
When did Max actually move from BP to FB anyway?

CHB has for the past 50 years been a 'twilight zone' for us.
Whilst we've had stars playing in just about every other position on the ground, we somehow haven't had a really great CHB since Synman and Neil Roberts before him.

Probably the best CHB we had in that period never played there for us - Val Perovic.

Eel Elphinstone was probably the best we've had in that period?
Others that spring to mind are Morris, Robert Elliott, Russell Reynolds, Phil Stevens (maybe more a flanker?)

Disagree...

I would have Frawley at FB over Hudghton tho....

Fisher one of the first picked at CHB...

The way he is going, he will be in our team of the century...

Underrated by many of his own teams supporters, let alone others in the comp...

Best backman in the comp right now IMO...

Spine is easy...

Frawley, Fisher, Hayes, Roo, Plugger...

Followers: Spider, Harvey, Burke..

The rest is too tough, but Aussie's in there for sure... As is Fraser...

2 of my all time fav's...

Barker too, obviously..

Well if we are getting technical in exact positions yes id have him over Maxy.
Maxy would get in over Bakes in pocket then.,..

Nope, I'd have him in the Back Pocket, instead of Burke.
Burke would be my Rover.

I thnk Fisher has been our best CHB over the last 30 years (and another couple of seasons like this year will see him considered a champion of the club)

And I would have Joey out of the team as the 'mid' being replaced by Burke.

Frawley for Max, hands down.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Almost impossibe to do, for a number of reasons.
Not the least being who knows how good players of the early 20th century were?
and
Playing styles have changed so dramatically over time.

Just a thought for you to ponder.
Lenny Hayes is taller than our 1966 Premiership ruckman Alan Morrow.

Yep i agree. I wonder if Allan Grant has ever tried to do it. He seems to know the Saints history and all the players like the back of his hand... Actually great read are the For The Love Of The Jumper articles he writes...

hehe i actually did know that fact, cant remember why but it came up not long ago. When you actually go back over our history we have actually hardly had many ruckman that have played more then like 50-100 games for our club.

A true "follower"!

When did the term follower make way for ruckman?

Everitt would have to be in the ruck, and toss the coin for Max or Danny. Don't forget David Grant in the backline- played some top games back in the early '90s.

always love these discussions

I know we all love Hamill (but)

does his number of games for us (at full fitness) actually get him into this sort of team

Also pup sarau one of my all time favourites but by 1980 his best days were behind him

my chf would be #23 with Roo on a flank

David Grant seconded. I was a huge fan of his back in the Moorabbin days.
Prolly takes Bakers place for mine.

Would Tim Pekin or Brett Voss find a place on the bench in this team perhaps?

Yea i reckon when you do these kind of things you have to have a min games played requirement.

I think you will find that Robert Harvey was the same height or taller than Doc.

Didn't see Grant but he was one omission I noticed.

Not wanting to put GT down but was that the year there were about 3 separate VIC sides selected and he played in one of those teams. Maybe a game in the ACT?

It's a good side, but probably have some of the modern day players slightly overated

Grant over Baker

Loewe to CHF,most underated player the games seen, and better than Rewoildt

Would probably have Burkie on the ball with Harves also in front of NDS.

Spider is stiff

Max and spud,toss a coin?
