Our potential draftee's

Post: # 1165919Post mohannair »

Based on one of the forums in the BF these are the potential draftees,

#25 St Kilda - Myles Bolger (WA - Ruck)
Height: 199cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 25/03/1993
Recruited from: South Fremantle Football Club
Style: Darren Jolly
Player comparison:
Range: 10-35
Profile: Fantastic tap ruckman, gives mids first use consistently and taps to advantage. Around the ground also very good. Strong mark overhead. Skill level very good for a ruckman. My main concerns are that he doesn’t really jump in the ruck and against bigger or more athletic opponents he might struggle. Not a super athlete and given current lack of size will need to bulk up all. Also has had injury concerns - foot. But 1st round quality ruckman. Give him time because he has essentially missed 2 years of footy.

#35 St Kilda – Shane Kersten (WA – Fwd/KPF)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 90kg, DOB: 15/03/1993
Recruited from: South Fremantle
Style: Brendan Fevola
Player comparison:
Range: 10-rookie
Profile: Undersized key position forward. Was a standout in the 2010 U18 champs but has had injury difficulties this year. Has a great goal sense. Really strong mark on the lead and is that leading type forward. Has a nice long right foot kick and can use his left around the goal without any difficulty. Doesn’t have a whole lot of positional flexibility and probably will play as a leading full forward at the next level even though at his size I’d rather he be more of a 3rd tall. Form has been there and has finished off the season incredibly strongly with some massive hauls. Very ready to go for a key forward but at his height upside possibly limited so you draft him on what he can produce now.

#37 St Kilda – Nic Haynes (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 18/05/1992
Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays
Style:
Player comparison: Sam Gilbert (Fwd version)
Range: 15-45
Profile: Tall wingman who can play forward. Is that year older. Very thin build still. Late bloomer and has grown significantly over past 2 years suggesting more improvement. Very strong overhead and consistently marks at the highest point. Very agile and has nice running ability.

#42 St Kilda – Jackson Merrett (VIC – Mid/Util)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 27/02/1993
Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
Style:
Player comparison: Jasper Pittard
Range: 20-60
Profile: Versatile type midfielder who doesn’t really stand out which might by why there has been limited talk about him to this point. Still skinny. But is quality. Has pace and a really nice skill set. More of an outside player but can take his turn inside. Has great leadership potential and seems to be really motivated and looks like a good find.

#60 St Kilda – Nic O’Brien (VIC - Fwd)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 89kg, DOB: 26/06/1993
Recruited from: North Ballarat Rebels
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: 35-rookie
Profile: Good size for a medium forward. Strong mark overhead and on the lead. Presents really well. Good tackling ability and gives those 2nd and 3rd efforts. Performances throughout the year have been very good. Has good vision but kicking can at times let him down at times, really needs to work hard on it.

#68 St Kilda – Sam Dwyer (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 179cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 29/08/1986
Recruited from: Port Melbourne
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: late-rookie
Profile: Has at VFL level been essentially the best player on the best team. Not young but is that immediate player to who can make a team better right away. Hard worker. Has a high skill level and has really nice pace. Very agile and can dance around players. What I really like in his game is his delivery to his leading forwards, just weights it perfectly and knows where his forwards want it. Is that clear class above VFL level.

#78 St Kilda – Michael Mascoulis (VIC – Def/Mid)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB:
Recruited from: Northern Knights
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: 35-rookie
Profile: Left footer who can play on a back flank or on a wing well. Lacks consistency, but the talent is there. Really great attacking player with that great line breaking pace and ability to make you look silly. Can kick well on either foot and has some hurt factor.

Hope we're not committed to using pick 68 just because we got it for Walsh. As the above shows six picks in this draft is two or three too many unless you want to add in experienced and recycled players.

First pick a ruckman who can't jump... we've already got one of those.

Second pick an undersized key position forward... hell we've got one of those as well.

Pick 68 Sam Dwyer, who has been showing the same good pace and judgement, the same great kicking skills for 5 years in the VFL but now may have a look in at last as a 25yo simply because other VFL players have gone well when drafted. Maybe we should go a little earlier and grab him?

Forget Nic O'Brien...do not need any more players who need to work hard on their kicking thanks very much :-)

So we'd have Nic Haynes and Nick Heyne.

I think we should go for more Toms.

Bolger can play and would be a great pick up he kinda reminds me of Dean Cox in his early WAFL days ( don't get too excited Cox was slow and unfit and looked like he was only worth a rookie spot in his WAFL days )

I like this kid.. Have seen him play when he played at somerville.. Kid has skills.. Good grab on him and kicks well too... look at the video... Needs to hit the gym but all young rucks do... Only problem is he will most likely be gone well before pick 25.. May go top 10...

Todd Elton

Height: 197cm
Weight: 90kg
DOB: 29/4/93
Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays (Vic)

Kevin Sheehan says: Tall forward and ruckman who is very athletic and strong both overhead and at ground level. Averaged 12 disposals with 4 marks, 2 tackles in the TAC Cup matches this year and also represented Vic Country in the AFL U18s.

In his own words

What type of player are you?
I am a tall, athletic, aggressive player. I have strong marking ability and am team oriented.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
A mixture of Nick Riewoldt and Patrick Ryder. I lead strongly with a good overhead mark and ruck well and move around the ground well.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
Size, agility, running capacity, mental toughness, speed and overhead marking.

Not too keen on the idea of using our first pick on a kid who we want to become our 2nd ruckman. Would prefer it to be used on a big forward or defender, now that Walsh has gone. We could then use one of our next two picks to pick up the other, big forward or defender that we did not get with our first pick, and a good mid. Then use one of the later picks for the ruckman

Not too keen on using our first pick with a specific position in mind. Lets just be boring for a first few and get the best available player... if a slider comes through, pick him up.

First pick will be a midfielder ...

Post: # 1166623Post WinnersOnly »

If you have a look at Emma QUALES article she believes because GWS have so many early drafts, they will be taking players based on positions rather than rating. As a result it is likely that some quality midfielders will slip through to later picks.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/n ... 1lyr3.html

Shane Nelson (WA - Mid)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 11/05/1993
Recruited from: West Perth Football Club

Daniel Markworth (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 03/04/1992
Recruited from: Calder Cannons

Thomas Sheridan (VIC – Mid/Util)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB: 28/10/1993
Recruited from: Calder Cannons

Clay Smith (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 180cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 11/05/1993
Recruited from: Gippsland Power

Sam Kerridge (VIC - Mid)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 26/04/1993
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers

After our Selection # 25 when can then go after positional players such as a Full Forwards - Julian DOBSZ, Todd ELTON or Shane KERSTEN or a ruckman in Myles BOLGER.

It will be interesting as obviously the Saints recruiters dont think the draft is a bad as what other clubs are planning for.
