So why can't we play Freo in Round 1?

It's not like we have many concessions with the Fixture.

The only game the AFL is obsessed we have each year is that stupid Monday night game against Carlscum!

Some (Collingwood) will travel Interstate 5 times. Others (not including sold games) will travel Interstate 7-8 times. We need to read through the propoganda !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

they have to up the minimum owing to there being an extra non-Victorian team. but collingwood will still get their un-fair share.

average number (excluding sold games) and assuming an even world ( almost couldn't write that) is:
- play everyone once = 8 non-Vic teams = average 4 interstate games for Vic teams assuming alternating home / away
- extra 5 games out of the 17 opposition teams, 8 of which are non-Vic = 5/17 = 0.294 x 8 = 2.35 games on average against non-Vics - assume half are home / away gives another 1.18 additional interstate games

so average interstate games for Vic teams is 5.18.

by the same logic, pre-GC & GWS this would have come to an average of 4.4 for non-Vic teams.

so collingwood playing 5 versus the average of 5.18 is much better (i.e more even) than 4 vs 4.4.

that said they will probably play sydney (ANZ), gc, gws, port and adelaide as their trips (no trips to perth)

alternatively:

WC v Freo = 2 games
Adel v Port = 2 games
Syd v GWS = 2 games
Bris v GC = 2 games

this leaves 10 home games for each interstate team (80 in total), to be played against the 16 out of state teams.

10 of the 16 out of state team are Vic teams.

80 x (10/16) = 50 games against Vic teams

this is exactly 5 games per Vic team, which is the stated minimum. can't see how you could play more than 5 if no-one is playing less than 5, because the average won't work. i'm sure the AFL will find a way.

(pre-GC & GWS - the same logic gives 4.4 interstate games per Vic team, so some* had to play 4 to maintain the average but not sure why some played 6...)

*collingwood apparently

Hawthorn have 3 extra interstate and the Tigers have 2. Melbourne may also have a couple.

Stop whining, how many times do interstate teams have to travel a season?

Always thought the answer was 42, or was that to Life, the Universe, and Everything?

but if you switch your own home game interstate then that is your own choice. these are often against teams travelling to vic from interstate anyway, so doesn't add to the Vic teams trips.

obviously not the same, but until there are even numbers of teams in each state then that will always be the case.

i'm hardly whining - this is a competition and travelling interstate to play is widely acknowledged as a disadvantage - so why should one Vic team travel more than any other?

I seem to remember Mark Harvey having a whinge about it at a press conf once, maybe at the end of last year. But anyway, who cares?

that's always been part of the coaching culture at freo - it's not my fault!
it will continue!

Only question is that do games in Tassie against North and Hawks count? Because they should not count towards the quota.
