I was down there recently and was told that there is no such thing as a closed training any more. they are all open, but they only advertise 1 every couple of weeks.
if your lucky enough to turn up on a day and time they are training nobody will stop you from watching, in the past they hired security to show you the way out.

I've walked it( or part of it) once schmic_s but took me forever to find the smallest as the pedestal size dropped which confused us.

we took photos using a small saints bear to provide comparison.

and I'd post some But I mortally wounded my C drive and thankfully know really really good and friendly technician.

I was at training, paid my membership and for my Reserve seat whilst i was there, not getting any cheaper but while i'm still in the workforce i can cope.

Most interesting part of training were the sprint sessions that seem to have been conducted by an outside mob, my guess the V.I.S.

Schneider is a cheat, he kept taking off before he was meant to which prompted Kosi to ask him why he kept breaking and on the very next sprint
Kosi broke, got to the other end first with arms out like he'd won an olympic
sprint.....

Gilbert quit the sprints early and went off for treatment for some minor leg complaint but came back out and did some laps....

Lots of young skinny dudes in the squad, not sure who they all are but Saad trained well....

They did some centre clearance work and when they broke free they often kicked it to Kosi who was parked deep forward...

I was there for 2 hours and left before training finished

all the usual stuff happened- kicking and marking and tackling and running and more running and more running.
Sippos home sick

BJ was doing introduction to running 101- run 1-200- then walk a few- then run again then walk again- But getting back into it
Gwilt was running- which again is good- and seemed to have no limp whenever I saw him.
others mainly doing running were Simpkin, Winmar, Cripps, Archer, Dempster,
Laidley and Sexton walked several laps prior to training.

the sprint videoing ws interesting first group with CJ leading the way knew about 'ready set go' and were able to sustain the take off without breaking, the waiting groups looked like true athletes with doing some stretching and warm ups
But thats as much like athletes as they proved to be- each of the next 3-4 groups had atleast one or two who would have been DQ'd if in a real race,
those running the sprinting even tried changing the count in to 5,4,3,2,1 go- But many players insisted on going on the 1-Ledger did set of on Go but his 'seniors' were already on their way-
Rhys lead his group,
the last group which comprised mainly young/ new players were better But obviously didn't have a number of years away from that sort of instruction.

another drill I was pleased to see was one which required the group doing to to make a judgement on where the ball was going to land ( Yes Kosi was involved)
they were in a group and had an item to drop to a spot once a ball being kicked toward them had started in flight- and the one which was closest to the spot the ball landed was noted.

as Noted in another thread- great to see 3 of the newest saints - of just 1 week- take on the chatting to supporters- even if they did have to say who they were first,
it was Chips who reminded players to come and say hi to fans after the 'huddle'
quite a few players stayed out for some time after the 'official' session had finished.

ps The saints also had an orange bra wearing player during training- but he got a shirt on quite cuickly.

Cheers Bob and Saintbrat

Nice to hear that Rhys still has his pace, if all else fails he could become a half back flanker who runs the ball out

I'll copy and paste my slightly sunburnt report from BigFooty.

Warning: Most of my photos are rubbish because I'm still working out my new toy. It's also possible I may have gotten the order of some of the drills wrong. I may have muddled Markworth and Webster a little, they look a lot alike at a distance (get a haircut one of you!).

Rocked up at 9:30 to find the boys already out there. Caught the pre-training huddle then they split up. A sprint drill was being set up down the clubhouse end but I drifted down the far end to watch the largest group practicing kick-to-kick. That draftee Blake looked alright, could even poll a Brownlow vote. Lenny was doing okay too, although I almost copped a stray kick from his partner.

Image

Thought I had a great view when they moved to practice kicking for goal. Then the balls started coming my way. Decided I'd get a better view if I wasn't fearing for my life.

Still a few balls came my way. Set Big Ben up for a goal assist, he picked my handpass off the ground and snapped it through nicely. Apparently I jinxed Daniel Markworth when I told him I expected him to convert my pass, he promptly sprayed it across the face (prior to that he'd slotted through several lovely left footers).

Schneiderman let out a naughty word when he missed a snap attempt and then apologised to the girls within earshot. Seb Ross's left foot is nice but what I saw of his right needed work. Kosi still has lovely technique and reminded me why I still rate him as first 18 material, for all his faults he's a lovely set shot and a great set of hands. Dal was very disappointing, missed 3/4 I saw him attempt, two of them weren't by a little. Milney was poetry to watch. Gwilt you may notice was one of the ones doing laps.

Image

Players got a little more organised and got to practising set shots one at a time, complete with all sorts of interesting distractions coming from the man on the mark (Huddo or Sexton, I've forgotten which). Most of them were from behind the blue cutouts, which if you look close have horns on them. Good to see Lenny was taking full part in this.

Image

If they really wanted to test their limits of distraction, need to record Milney and play him back.

Went and watched the sprints briefly, Big Rhys still quick as ever. Then I remembered athletics bores me so went across the other side of the oval.

Watching the midfield group reminded me how badly we need another ruckman and also that Big Ben would benefit from another body to work with. He's been spoilt the last few years with the likes of King and Gardiner to practise on, we need a big body for him to compete against as well as to back him up. Hell, for one tap-down drill that was run in two groups it started off with Big Ben palming to one group and Seb Ross the other (who then switched with Danny Hughes who was finally relieved by Jay Lever).

CJ was doing really nicely in the inside mid role, at one point Lenny went to put a hard tag on him. Of course it helps that Big Ben was the only ruck and so found it a lot easier to direct taps.

To my right the defenders were beating the snot out of each other. In pairs they were practising shove-offs, Geary and Big Fish in particular were going at it. Interestingly Wilkes was still training with this group and Raph preferred to use speed rather than strength, waiting for his opponent to make a move then countering.

Image

Then onto tackling drills. Two groups, two lines in each group, the ball was rolled towards one player who had to evade while the other tried to lay a tackle. There were only three ways past, you had to be strong enough to shove off your opponent, quick enough to go around or lucky with the rolling ball.

Milney excelled in both categories, as did Saad. I pitied whatever fool was up against Lenny, but once or twice an opponent did slip by. You did not want to get wrapped up in a Kosi tackle. Jimmy Webster didn't fare well, he got caught or dodged the majority of times I saw him. Disappointingly young Jack Steven was doing laps and didn't take part. Big Ben looks to be using to learn his strength, although not so much in this shot against Markworth/Webster (players that look that similar are why there are numbers)

Image

Final drill of the day focused on positioning and interchange. A handful of players in vests in the midfield against a handful of others, Big Ben tapping to the Saints who then moved it forward to a particular forward set-up. Players came on and off constantly, talking to the coaches and each other about where they were supposed to be. Kosi was the main forward target, but Rhys was used a little. When Big Ben rested, Rhys relieved him. Little Jimmy Webster almost became Littler Jimmy Webster when he got underneath a high ball Kosi had his eyes on.

Goddard mainly ran laps, as did Gilbo, Milera, Gwilt, Dempster, Archer, Crocker and possibly Cripps. Winmar did light work. No sign of Roo or Gram, also Siposs may have been missing. I'm sure someone will correct my mistakes in this area.

Toast:
Daniel Markworth - Turns out the brainbox is a cheeky bugger, but he's got skills. Really liked what I saw, particularly his left foot. Kid's got confidence too.

Ahmed Saad - Golden Child is quick, slick and slippery. Dominated the tackling/evade drill. Lovely set shot too from what I saw.

Stephen Milne - Never shuts up, but in a good way. Did well at kicking for goal and tackling and evading.

Danny Hughes - We're all allowed our favourites. Strong, talks well and pretty decent kick on him.
