Who is Brett Meredith?
In 2007 Ross Lyon's bestest buddy Paul Roos swapped two Swans role-players for the #26 draft pick that landed them Brett Meredith, in the same draft that landed us McEvoy & Steven: It would have been nice to have another pick in that draft, which features a long list of names now familiar to us as current day gun players; (before pick 26) Kreuzer, Cotchin, Palmer, Dangerfield, Rioli, Brad Ebert, Grimes, Harry Taylor, Scott Selwood, (after pick 26) Greenwood, Westhoff, Grima, Taylor Walker and more. We can't really complain as we used our remaining 2 picks on dragging G-Train out of retirement and Eljay Connors.
Those two players? Adam Schneider and Sean "You've been Dempstered" Dempster, a father-son pickup for the Bloods originally.
Fair to say we did ok out of that deal. Never let it be said that Roos never did anything for the Saints. Symptomatic of the short-sighted focus of our previous coach, who spurned the future for 2 very good pickups that we have done very well out of.
The question is what would YOU have done? Who knows how Dempster and Schneids would have turned out, or who would have been left for pick 26 had we kept it. As it turns out both those players have been more than handy for us in the past and perhaps in the future too. Schneids missed a couple of potentially match-winning goals in the GF2009, but he didn't lose the game by himself, he had plenty of mates. He's put in individual efforts that have got us over the line in the past and formed a link with Milney in the forward line, or Monty as the lineman between midfield and forward. As for Dempster, he and Clint Jones are essential team players who shut down and occasionally create.
Let's have a look at Ahmed Saad and Terry Milera now, who along with the pick that landed us Seb Ross, were swapped by GWS for pick 20 which they exchanged to Freo for a compensation pick at the end of Rd1; Freo used 'our' pick 20 to pick up Hayden Crozier.
Who cares really, it's purely academic, but unless Crozier turns out to be a gun, which he may, or all 3 of Saad Milera and Ross turn out to be duds, I think we did pretty well out of that deal too.
Still doesn't make up for the litany of past mistakes, but it's good to see our recruiters getting it right.
I don't know what I'm trying to say here, if you're wondering. This thread started off on one thing and then veered off on a tangent. Perhaps an example of where there is no right or wrong way?
Brett Meredith - ring any bells?

Was just thinking about this today. For the loss of one pick and 5 spots in a weak draft we got Schneider, Dempster, Milera, Saad and Ross.
A little better than the Brooks and Watts trades, no?
