Robert Harvey..

Post: # 1358795Post Calais »

In your opinion do you think he will one day coach the Saints? What's your gut feel?

*Please note* - Yes, I do know some dont think he'll make a good head coach coach whilst others say being a club great doesnt necessarily mean they'll be a good coach so just personal opinion,

Will he one day coach the mighty Saints?

Hasn't exactly set the world on fire at the three clubs where he's been assistant coach.

I'd love him as a specialist coach and to always be involved with the club in some way.

Probably too hard to time the right run. His contemporaries haven't set the world on fire- Voss, Bucks and Hird.

from the little I know about the subject of coaching an AFL team (which is pretty well next to nothing), I would say Rob Harvey strikes me as an excellent assistant coach, but may not have the communication skills for the senior role.

I dont know, just because you dont seem articulate in front of a mic, doesn't mean you cant get your message across to the players.

A senior coach needs to do that for the whole list (apparently a big Ross Lyon weakness), have boardroom presence, can articulate their future vision for the team and the club (especially when things aren't going well like three wins in a season), work with the assistant coaches, and keep an active eye on recruiting and trading with the manager.

Also has to be able to be a good matchday coach.

Could harv's achieve all that? Well perceptions are everything and most people percieve him as being a quiet, poor communicator.

So probably a no.

Lance or James??

If Scott Watters doesn't meet his and the clubs targets/expectations over the next 18 months then it wouldn't surprise me to see him get a go, possibly with a senior bloke as an assistant in the mould of the Hird Thompson arrangement!

Maybe this year?

Do any of us know Robert that well.

BTW
Gone are the days of a coach being a motivator, that's really left up to the player group, in particular leadership group.

What a coach does need
Clear understanding of football patters and a strategy and use his resources to win. To be able to make decision under pressure to change the course of a game. To understand player development and how to maximise potential.
To be able to delegate reonsibilty, but have control of coaching group, playing group. Needs to be respected by player group.

Don't need a hot gospel coach... They are generally rubbish.

Harves...
Don't really know his capability to deliver on those aspects of coaching.

His public speaking had got a heck of a lot better... When he spoke before Dals 250th the umms and ahhhs had gone and he seemed a lot happier in front of a crowd.

I think he is a very eloquent speaker... He is just very considered/measured and softly spoken. Not a loud mouth arrogant raver who speaks to hear his own voice. He says what he has to say, with minimum fuss.

I will say this, when he speaks.... People listen.

2 weeks ago, I would have agreed with this 100%.

But, then I watched the video of the Roo/Dal pre-game presentation with Harvs and Spud. He spoke with real purpose, not an umm or an ahh to be seen, and the room was silent. Perhaps he didnt know there was a video camera in there, and amongst the inner sanctum, his true communication skills came out??

What do you mean

His true communication skills came out??

That's my point.... We don't know what they are, purely because he does not spruke! The reason you changed you mind after a few minutes grab says this.... You probably didn't know or realise what his comm skills are like

None of us would.

He was shy and quiet as a footballer, he doesn't seek the media..... A reason he was underrated as a player (ridiculous) and underrated as a coach probably

Perhaps he needs to go into the print media, go on the foot show or become a commentator?

Btw
Tim Watson.... Born communicator

Are Melbourne chasing him? If he's not good enough for them, he's definitely not for us.

I love the bloke.
He is a brilliant footballer and I reckon, for what it's worth, that he is a great assistant mentoring young players. Not senior coach material in my opinion.
