Bringing the Game in to Disrepute?

Post: # 1370995Post rodgerfox »

Can you only be done for this, if the media find out?

I mean, if the AFL found out about all Essendon's shenanigans, but the public didn't, are they still bringing the game into disrepute?

And at what point, does 'disrepute' occur?

Apparently Essendon are responsible for the biggest scandal ever to hit the game. But aside from the media circus, they haven't done anything wrong yet. And if it turns out that they haven't done anything illegal, why is it there fault that media jumped the gun, went beserk and got it wrong?

And if they get done for disrepute for something legal - why isn't it illegal? If it's worthy of bringing the game into disrepute - then why isn't it (whatever it is) illegal?

Yours Sincerely,

I would thinking waiting for the report from ASADA is the most logical thing to do.

So why are the AFL leaking reports to the media about stripping points?

Isn't there a thread about Essendon already?

Yeah, but this is more of an AFL thread. Not specifically Essendon.

Through the reading of this thread and the plethora of others like it I have come to the conclusion that we all hate the AFL and clearly hate most things about St. Kilda too...Surely there are some redeeming features of this great game and the body that runs it, otherwise we'd all be following some other sport. The AFL doesn't always get everything right, but this is a tough situation for any governing body. The media hype coupled with the "interim" nature of the report the AFL has in their hands has really left the organisation stuck between a rock and a hard place, in a sort of limbo of descending chaos.

Damage is being done to both the brand and its stakeholders as Essendon is dragged through the mud; whilst I hope they get done for any rule breaches the protracted nature of the ASADA investigation, and public interest in the issue means its a lose lose. Essendon on the face of it is bringing the game into disrepute by tarnishing the AFL brand, but if it turns out they haven't done anything wrong there can't be any sanctions against Essendon, and again the AFL loses. The damage has already been done as far as the AFL is concerned, punishing Essendon (bringing the game into disrepute) is really more of a public gesture in terms of showing the world they're tough on such issues. Player sanctions for drug code breaches is outside of the AFL's hands so is a separate issue entirely.

It's whatever they want it to mean, a handy catch-all clause/charge.

And even if whatever it was for wasn't public, it would be once they charged you with it.

The AFL work out the outcome they want, and then reverse engineer/justify it.

Problem is this time WADA trumps them, and can do the same.

And given the global climate surrounding drugs in sport, I'd say the bombers are in for a brutal punishment.

And (it's probably stating the blindingly obvious, but) I reckon in this case they'll be desperate to hand down a penalty that is not appealed by WADA, while being as 'lenient' as possible.

It's timing. They don't want to strip Essendon if points now to protect crowd numbers and ratings for bombers games.

Well unless it is "public", it can hardly be "bringing the game into direspute"

So the answer is yes.

I do follow other sports.

I follow other sports much more closely and passionately than before, and more than the AFL. 10-15 years ago, the mere thought of that would have been deadset horrific.

The game has changed. It's not run well. The passion and emotion that actually connected people ot the game is being taken away - and once you don't have the emotion, the game is very dull.

Can you tell us all these other sports you follow that are run better than the AFL?

Most sports are run better.

Why? Because they cater for what people want. And they give it to them.

The AFL are dragging their customers down a path, that many don't want. And the biggest mistake is, that down that path there are many, many other options.

No other sport could compete for the emotion and tribal passion that Aussies had for this game. None.

But many, many (if not all) other sports can compete with the AFL for the entertainment value. That's their biggest mistake and one that will bring them undone.

They've distanced the game from the passionate diehards, in order to go head to head for the entertainment dollar. And they'll lose that fight.

So which sports do you now follow that are run better? I cant think of to many but im not the type of person that seems to hate everything about the game but comes on here under 2 different nicks to tell us how bad the game is. Now that is rather weird. now which sports do you follow that are run better.

Stripping them of draft picks would be enough of a penalty. Plus with Adelaide being out of the first couple of rounds too, it will be a great opportunity for us to pick up some talent.

The Essendon situation was made public by the Australian Crime Commission not the AFL.
Essendon have most likely engaged in a systematic doping of their players.
If this is not proven its going to be due to lack of evidence more than anything else, because they purposely have no records of anything.

Therefore I'm happy for them to be punished for "Bringing the game into disrepute" or "Income Tax Evasion" or anything else we can throw at them.

If you want bringing the game into disrepute all you need to do is look at the Collingwood cheers squad - bound for glory

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Why are there 2 threads purely on the Essendon situation on the Saints Forum?
