New AFL CEO.. What does it mean for us ?
Gillon Mclachlan has been announced the new AFL CEO replacing Andy D. He takes over in June.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-04-30/m ... -the-chief
It's interesting to read what some of his priorities are.
Supporting weaker clubs and engaging the fan base. Hopefully this will be a positive for us. We need the Etihad deal equalised with other's deals to make it a level playing field.
We need access to prime time games such as Anzac Day,Queen's birthday etc.
A level playing field allows small clubs to have a realistic chance of success and an competition that can allow any club to reach the ultimate is a winning business model.
The NFL is an example with a team like the Green Bay packers able to upstage many huge clubs.
He sees overseas games being limited to NZ at the moment.
Hopefully this means the AFL will give us all the support we need to continue the association.
Help from the AFL as the GWS model gets and needs in a non AFL area will obviously be a bonus.
Plus the fact he is a Saints man

A saints fan so could be very good. my vision is a future where the restrictive stadium deals to pay off the AFLs stadiums are given the flick. We would rather have our own income stream than beg the AFL for hand outs. Come on Gil get it done.

Not a surprise that AD is getting out before the proverbial hits the fan regarding a certain team.

In fact we've now got two of nine Commissioners on our side - Paul Bassat the other. Not sure that will help us though - they're all pretty hard-headed business types. Dollars will talk and we don't bring many in.gringo wrote:A saints fan so could be very good.

Re: New AFL CEO.. What does it mean for us ?
He said on SEN that the way to fix the stadium deal issue was to buy Etihad. Worst case scenario was in 10 years, but he wants to get it done sooner. He said though that at the moment, it is cheaper for the AFL to give the money directly to the clubs with the bad deals than it was to bring forward the purchase of the stadium.

No, you're slightly wrong there. We, as are the other teams, are very important to the AFL. What they don't want is to drip feed us with funds. St.Kilda needs money men to put money into the club ( like the big power brokers at the bigger clubs ) That support produces sponsorship, exposure and eventually membership and ultimately success. Gillon is hoping to coerce some of the wealthier saints supporters into supporting some new initiatives with possibly a good return for their buck. He has plans and St.Kilda is part of it.

I can't find anything more on the "March On" campaign that was spoken of early in the year.
Can you tell us anything about this ?

Re: New AFL CEO.. What does it mean for us ?
Gillon McLachlan seems to have a wider, more inclusive approach. I think that he is wise enough to see that the "paying public" are not happy at the moment and that he will "have to " address smaller Clubs' issues.
On the other hand, Demetriou did a great job in growing the AFL- to the point that it was becoming only about the money. A consultative, more inclusive approach is now needed in the management of things. That he is a Saints supporter at heart, can only help and I expect that Matt Finnis is a lot closer to him, than he was with Demetriou. Our main training area may even end up back at the Junction Oval and be our "permanent" home

I doubt his appointed will mean any preferential treatment because he is a saints fan. I mean Andy D was a Kangas man and that didn't allow them any special favors. Having said that it's nice the top dog is one of us.
