Saints shafted in free to air exposure

Post: # 1526699Post philtee »

Crunched a bit of data on the free-to-air TV exposure that Saints matches will get
in Melbourne in 2015.

Compared our exposure with Collingwood's, of course.
Omitted Round 23. Assumed our Rd 21 match will be on 7.

CHANNEL 7 MATCHES
Collingwood 15.
St Kilda 8.

FOXTEL ONLY MATCHES
Collingwood 6.
St Kilda 13

PRIME TIME CHANNEL 7 MATCHES -
(Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night, around 2pm Saturday)
Collingwood 12
St Kilda 4.

FIVE of Collingwood's first SIX matches are in prime-time on Seven -
while only ONE of our matches is. (Ironically against Collingwood).

Only ONE of our first five matches is on free to air.

The playing field isn't level.
Collingwood has a gross advantage in free to air exposure.
Their fans, and casual TV watchers, have far greater accessibility and exposure
to Collingwood games on free to air TV, and in prime time.

The Collingwood brand is presented to bigger audiences, more consistently,
over longer stretches of the season. And that's important if you're selling
memberships, merchandise, and brand acceptance.

Thank goodness for financial equalization.
Now, if only that extended to TV coverage.

What this argument ISN'T about -
- we should all get Foxtel or a T-Box. Not the point.
- buy Foxtel you cheapo. Not the point.
- I'm not giving money to Murdoch. Not the point.

What do you expect. Lowest Victorian membership last year compared the highest. Bottom of the ladder and smashed in many games. We got plenty of exposure when we were going well but that didn't help our sponsorship back then. TV pays huge money which helps clubs like us stay afloat so they get a huge say on Games. Get Foxtel. It costs $12 a week. If people cant afford that much then they really must be struggling.

Free to Air TV is s.h.i.t these days anyway, Foxtel is where it’s at. Pay the extra, get 9/9 channels of wall to wall sport, 24/7. And the ladies that Fox Sports use on Channel 500 (Fox Sports News) are usually good to look at too.

USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Anyway, I'll be watching the games I can't get to on AFL catch-up the next day.
Or on the phone app, which makes everything tiny..

Its not unexpected. TV stations are in the business of making money and quite frankly its the AFL scheduling that has the most impact on which games get televised. With negotiations on the next TV rights to start this year, you can bet the AFL wants the current TV broadcasters to make a killing so that they will put even more bucks into their next bid.

We are a small club (using membership numbers), we finished bottom and arent expected to do much better this year. We arent going to draw high ratings in our current state. When we start playing some exciting footy, put a few wins on the board and/or are still a chance to win the game with a few minutes to go, the AFL will consider us for primetime and therefore FTA.

Not all is as it seems. We were the second most watched club on tv, so as far as ratings thats false, and regardless of membership it makes a huge difference to our club, why do you suppose a sponsor might want to sponsor us?

The draft needs to and should be run by an independent body. Currently it's rigged. Does a fair go mean anything in this country anymore?

As far as CH7 and foxtel goes I hope they don't get it next time. Time for CH9 and CH10 and telstra (perhaps netflixs) to get together and broadcast every game.

The free to air games that ch7 don't want should be available to other channels to bid on. I hate foxtel to a T. Remember they wouldn't even allow Radio to broadcast live games and if they had there own way they still wouldn't be able to.

No sorry you can't have afl only on foxtel

Not sure who I would tell to go stuff themselves first, Collingwood FC, Foxtel , CH7 or the AFL

St Kilda 0
Collingwood 0

Does that make it equal?

I will go so far to say we are not the second most watched club on TV. I believe that to be totally wrong or do Channel 7 not like good ratings? I have no idea what you are on about regarding Foxtel. I again think that is made up. And AFL is not only on Foxtel and I doubt it will be for a long while but im glad they do have the other games that channel 7 don't want because they are happy to pay a fortune for that which in the long run helps our club. I doubt 9 or 10 would pay a fortune for rejected 7 games. I don't doubt it actually. They wouldn't.

As for the draft well you have completely lost me. Rigged? What does that mean? And an independent body running it. Then we would see claims of rigging. And why would other channels be better than 7. Im lost.

So I did the same adding-up for Richmond, and can only conclude they
are the League's new lovechild...the disparity is the same, or worse -

CHANNEL 7 MATCHES
Richmond 15.
St Kilda 8

FOXTEL ONLY MATCHES
Richmond 6
St Kilda 13

PRIME TIME CHANNEL 7 MATCHES -
Richmond 14
St Kilda 4.

Let's see...at 3 hours per broadcast, in terms of gratis exposure on major FTA media, that equates to
Richmond - 42 hours
St Kilda - 12 hours.
A disparity of 350%

And that's why you get Richmond and Collingwood merchandise sold in Target,
but Saints merch is hard to find.

Cant you see the pattern with both Richmond and the Pies. They both have huge memberships and Richmonds wasn't due to huge TV exposure. I don't think the Pies is either. They are just a huge club. I still don't get what you want to happen. You do realise we had huge exposure compared to some other clubs up until the end of 2011.

And for Essendon...still adored by the powers that be...
either too inept to know what players were injected with,
or too deceitful to tell us what players were injected with,
but Seven still loves them....

CHANNEL 7 MATCHES
Essendon 13
St Kilda 8.

FOXTEL ONLY MATCHES
Essendon 8
St Kilda 13.

PRIME TIME CHANNEL 7 MATCHES -
Essendon 9
St Kilda 4.

Rant ends.

Was sitting in a coffee lounge this morning, having a cup of coffee......... no, not a dare iced coffee. Was reading the cafe's copy of the Western Australian and here was an ad for Jim Kidd sports store. Do you have Jim Kidd stores in the Eastern States?

This advert was solely for St Kilda Football Club jumpers :o In Perth ??? WOW !! No other team, not even Eagles or Dockers were in this ad.

The best thing was the price. All of the jumpers were for $19.99

There were sleeveless, long sleeve (I think) and both home and away jumpers. Also there was on female style, that had a vee neck. Obviously they were last seasons stock as they had the LEDIFIED logo on them and no sign of dare.

Now I know proceeds of the sale of these jumpers don't go back to the Saints................ however if any Sainters in WA are on struggle street or have a few kiddies to deck out in Saints jumpers, these are good value IMHO............. if one can live with the thought of proceeds not going directly back to the Saints.

I have been living in this State now since 1996........ this is the first time I have seen an advert for St Kilda merchandise............... even when we were a top side it never happened.

The only time one ever sees St Kilda merchandise in a window in WA is in the AFL Shops. That is when the Saints are playing either Eagles or Dockers that weekend in Perth. The AFL Shops only seem to display other teams jumpers, when they are playing in WA.

Cheap, cheap, cheap at Jim Kidd stores!!!!!

Have you thought we haven't released jumpers yet due to the new sponsor? Have you come up with a solution yet?

At the other end of the scale, in the first 21 rounds we have one Friday night game, Melbourne has one and the Bulldogs don't have any.
We have 8 Ch 7 games, Melb have 7, Bulldogs have 8.
That's the reality of it. If we want more free to air exposure we need to win more games.

We finished bottom. TV wants to show a contest, not a walkover. When we become competitive again this situation will fix itself.

You could go 4 blocks north and buy it at the Moorabin Saints locker and all the coin goes to the club.
