Injury-prone Saint Nathan Freeman nearing return

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-07-08/i ... ing-return

INJURY-PRONE St Kilda recruit Nathan Freeman could return to football as soon as next week as he recovers from yet another hamstring setback.
Freeman has lined up in two VFL reserves games this season, but was re-injured after both of those matches.
"It could be as early as next week. We're not sure. He's still got a few boxes he's got to tick," Saints coach Alan Richardson said at a club function on Friday.
"There's some top-end speed running that he's got to get through."
Richardson flagged the possibility that Freeman could return through the VFL rather than the development league.
"It depends a little bit on numbers, given the agreement that we have with Sandringham. There's only a certain amount of players that we can play," the coach said.
"If the numbers allow us to play him, there's a chance that he'll come back in (through the VFL), but that's something that we'll discuss."

Bit of a surprise, thought we were considering sending him overseas.

Wanting to play him in the VFL also, must be further ahead than I thought..

Fingers crossed

The club has a lot of highly trained professionals looking after the lad.
Some on here think we don't DARE question their judgement.
"Highly trained and qualified" does NOT mean they are perfect.
I agree with you that I think they got it horribly wrong.
We'd love to be proven wrong.
Have a look at all the professionals in Formula One teams that can't develop a winning car, whose cars just make up the numbers and are 8 seconds a lap slower than the top cars.

The suggestion seems to be that he's 2 weeks away. Is the club trying to tell us something?

Well, I sure hope he gets on the field and stays healthy. We could really benefit from a strong, fast and classy midfielder.

Is Hamill mentoring him?

Is the club feeling pressured to get him through a few games this year? Another year of no footy and the media will have be all over them in the off-season about bad trades in Freeman and Carlisle. Maybe for Nathans emotional state they feel he needs to at least play a couple of games so he has something to hang on to through another tough off-season. Must be hard for him to keep his chin up as a footy player when he is basically just doing constant rehab.

In my possibly very misguided opinion, he first needs to get some bulk and muscle off his body. I think he looks like a young kid that bulked up too soon (in his pursuit of becoming an AFL player) whilst his body was still growing and its placed too much stress on parts (possibly lower back & hammies) of his body. From photos I've seen his thighs, quads appear over developed, out of proportion to his build.

I'd be sending him off to the fitness adviser/physio of the Australian Ballet - now they really know how to get elite performers over some horrendous leg/back injuries. Ballet dancers are superb athletes. Freeman wouldn't lose any fitness or strength training doing rehab work with a troupe of dancers.

As I said............. probably a well off the mark opinion of mine????

Great idea, Loris. Ballet dancers are incredible athletes and they also get some of the most unusual and persistent type of injuries. I'd be surprised if they haven't already consulted someone from the dancing world. I remember when I used to go to the Malvern Sports Medicine Clinic in the 80's, the waiting room was always full of dancers. It's a tough gig, ballet. Here's hoping someone can get him right. He's a jet when up and about.

Thats exactly what Collingwood did with Reid sent him to a female who treats ballet dancers. I read an article on it last week basically it was about balancing and switching on all the muscles in his legs to assist with his ongoing calf injuries. Seemed to have worked and he said Collingwood now send a number of players to her.

HTB........... The only thing missing is his 'cod piece', now all respectable Le danseurs have an impressive 'Le Cod Piece'

Then maybe that's what Carlton Draught does to a cod piece?

If all else fails, draft Michael Flatley. As a bonus, being Irish, we can list him as an international rookie. And he's really good at running on the spot!

Correct Loris

He's too heavy for what he needs to be... You expect him to get to that size 25-28yo after his body has adapted to the increased stress of carrying more weight

After 28 you need to trim down again.

One day there will probably be a routine procedure - maybe using spider silk (who knows?) - that will repair/bolster hamstring tendons.... and they'll probably add a few extra tendons for good measure.

if you want to take this analogy further
WE are a bit like Sauber been round for a long while & have only tasted glory once
on the other hand (Collingwood) Ferrari with all their money, expertise & trophy cabinet, couldnt get the thing to fire up
