Our Tackling

Post: # 1627436Post Goody »

I remember when Aaron Hammil first came to our club, I was amazed by the ferocious tackling he brought to our forward line plus a case of white line fever. It seemed that we locked the ball into our forward line and scored heavily.
I reckon he has installed a lot of himself into Mav Weller and the likes of Membery. It is such a pleasure to watch our boys hunting in packs and pressuring mistakes onto our opposition.
I know a lot of people here dont or didnt like Grant Thomas but I am seeing a lot of our 2004-05 type of aggression coming back and I LIKE IT!!

Followed Saints since '71
Sir Robert Harvey was my favorite player
Stewie Lowe and Plugger before that.
Loved watching Rooey and Jack Steven
Now looking forward to the future

Some people make things happen, some people watch things happen, but most just say " What the f#&k happened!".

Hamill's second and third efforts were as strong as his first effort
He had a very good work ethic

Yep, the gameplan was fantastic, we just lacked a competent ruck man to help us get first hands on the ball.

Love that AR has brought this back into our gameplan. Opposition teams are starting to fear us!

Our tackling has been spectacular. Some of our players tackle like feral amimals (I love it)

It's like our guys have been training with Melbourne Storm.

In addition to Weller & Membrey, we have Gilbert (rugby background), Armitage, Geary, Wright, and Dunstan, all fierce tacklers.

Have I missed any?

Hopefully the umpires will start to pay more free's for 'incorrect disposal' when the ball comes loose.

Was good to watch us lock them down.

The benefit of a taller midfielder was highlighted also - with Bontempelli being able to consistently free his hands in tackles and get away hanballs.

Been outstanding ... In 13 of 17 games

Four games we didn't tackle we were horrible
Ess, WC, Adel, GC

Every other team has struggled to cope

Geary, Webster, Newnes, Gilbert, Steven, Armo, Dunstan, Ross, Michington, Hickey, Bruce, Membrey, Gresham, Wright and of course Weller
Immense with their attack on the contest

Once we get the delivery into our forward 50 down we will be a good unit.

For a bloke who has heaps of ability and good closing pace (typified by his chasing down of Gwilt last year), Bruce lets himself and the team down by just loping around and finger-pointing. He needs some mongrel instilled in him. His apathy is also reflected in how he fails to lead sharply and clunk marks. He's not a power forward like Hawkins and shouldn't be calling for the long bomb as he's easily out-manoeuvred in most contests.

Needs to learn to time his leads better. McCartin back soon will take the pressure off both him and Members

PRESSURE — Queen sang about it, but St Kilda are becoming the kings of it.

The Saints’ rise from 2-6 battler to sneaky 9-8 finals chance is based on defensive desire and old fashioned one-percenters — corralling, chasing and tackling.

They are, what traditionalists would say, an honest side. When St Kilda bring the heat, rival sides can melt, particularly at Etihad Stadium.

“Our game is basically built on pressure and if we bring that we feel like we can compete against anyone,” defender Jarryn Geary said last month.

Our tackling is good against teams who like to accumulate hand balls and go sideways and backwards chipping the ball around.

The bigger bodied and faster midfield who move the ball forward with more purpose and less chipping around are killing us.

However we are getting better. Port slipped loose in patches of the game and we just beat up the Bulldogs in a huge turnaround from our first dance earlier this year.

The Gold Coast were just too fast and skillfull on the day.

The West Coast beat us up all over and so did Adelaide.

From here till the finals we only really need to fear Sydney.

I just hope we smash North onto the ground and that we get hold of the midget snipper a few times to slow down his record. Could the Hawks throw North a bone to keep us out of the finals. I wouldn't put anything past them.

If we had kicked 15% straighter this year we would be in the finals already and would have beaten all bar 3 teams in the 8.

Not hard to see where we need the improvement needs to come from.

Strange thing is our kicking efficiency is top notch and our marking inside 50 is top 5, while our goal kicking is pathetic.

Stop talking sense.

Not sure if the hawks would let north win as north are a side that can have the wood on the hawks in the past at least.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
