Poor conversion rate

Post: # 1797640Post saynta »

Should say piss poor actually.. 115 goals in 11 games and 122 behinds. God only knows how many complete misses.Conversion
From saints.com.au

Despite improved set-shot kicking, the Saints are still battling poor conversion in front of goal.

St Kilda has posted 115 goals in 11 games, while kicking 122 behinds. Poor conversion has stifled the Saints’ hopes of upset wins over Adelaide the West Coast Eagles. The inability to pile on scoreboard pressure in the first half has impacted the important momentum needed to overcome the best teams.

In other games, it’s been the inability to convert inside 50s into scoring opportunities with the loss to Collingwood at the MCG as the best example.

The Saints dominated the second term but left the Magpies off the hook with poor entries and long-range shots that sailed wide.

Making the most of their opportunities is all that stands between the Saints and becoming a genuine finals contender.

What annoys me the most is we dominate the play for periods but nothing to show for it on the score board due to poor conversion & decision making does my head in :x

Couldn’t agree more. But it’s not just a matter of kicking straighter. It’s the whole process, including personnel in front of the ball.

We’re continually kicking into a crowded forward line and many of our shots are scrambled and made under extreme pressure.

You look at the better teams - Collingwood for example. They isolate guys like De Goey and Stephenson. Give them plenty of space. Granted, these guys are great finishers and hard to beat one on one.

Yesterday Melbourne had one fewer shots at goal than Collingwood, yet lost by 40-odd points.

What was the difference between the sides? Magpies have better system in front of the ball and better personnel in front of the ball.

Everywhere else, they are pretty even but the Magpies have more efficient avenues to goal.

That’s where we have to improve.

I find the melbourne clowns quite hilarious.

Won clearences, disposals etc... all stats that count.

Their entries are SHOCKING and their goal kicking is an abortion.

Do they count them as inside 50s if they get bombed in and go straight to the opposition? Serious question.

Of course
Then the statistic is pretty meaningless, surely. What you want to know is how many times it went inside 50 in our possession. Inside 50 in their possession - who gives a...?

Exactly!!!

It's not a lack of ability, and it's not bad luck.

It's the method.

You want the defenders to be chaotic, but Cho's 6 year 'bomb it in to the top of the square' strategy is so predictable that the defence is the exact opposite of chaotic. They know exactly what they're doing and are completely prepared for it.
So much so, that we are the ones who are chaotic and under pressure when the ball is in our F50!

It's little wonder dudes can't nail goals consistently.

If it comes inside our 50, it’s classified as a scoring opportunity. Unless the opposition has passed it back to another player afaik

Some teams are fairly efficient once it enters inside 50. Others aren’t.

We belong to the latter category

How many times do we dominate early play for a scoreline something like 2.6 against 5.1? It's ridiculous and we will not be a successful team until this changes

I posted these comments from Milney a couple of weeks ago on our goalkicking accuracy ....
At the 2009 R14 Game revisited on Thurs night Milney was asked about our poor goalkicking over the last few years.

Milney offered two explanations
1) Practise
In his day he would often have a hundred shots at goal after official training to sharpen his skills.
But today the players aren't allowed to do extra training as they might suffer soft tissue injuries.
Milney's view on this is that it is "F@#$ing bulls***".

2) Fatigue
He said in his day he would run about 8 or 9 km a match, whereas a forward today is running up to 15 km a match to fill defensive holes.
So when they get a shot at goal their body is often screaming for a rest and that short term fatigue makes it a lot harder to execute an accurate kick.

Perhaps we need to go back to having a couple of stay at home forwards.
Downside is if the opposition run off them it is 18v16 in our defensive half.
But when we win possession across half back we would then
- actually have someone up forward to kick to instead of being forced to hold or switch
- and if we get it to them they will be fresh enough to kick truly

Yep, but that doesn't explain why 17 other clubs do better than us.

And also why we’re consistently inaccurate from the first bounce, not just later in games.
