Long was playing good football at half back in late 2019.
Started 2020 off flying at half back and was killing North in round 1 before injuring his ankle.

Not sure what happened but lost his half back spot and confidence and went backwards. Last night we was excellent and provides something different than Hill, Clark or Sinclair in that he is excellent overhead.

That is definitely his best position but I guess he’s fighting Clark, Sinclair, Hill, Paton, Webster etc for small defence role. I’m guessing he’s not lock down type so probably different to Webster/ Paton role.

I really hope the club retains Long I know they shopped him around a few years ago with no takers but now he is in good form they might try again.
Players like him who have a crack and make the opposition look over there shoulder is what we have been lacking, he is a tacking beast.
If they have to trade someone trade jones, not sure how much we would get for him.

You've always got to find something to whinge about, got a great ride from the umps yesterday so you had to fall back on this.

If the ump thought it was bad he would have paid a 50. It's not like he took his pen and pad out and wrote his number down. Most likely just saying it to break up the fight, as a poster said earlier.

But keep crying' Curly, it's what you do best.

My god your lame attempts to defend this bias is even more shocking than your previous efforts.

Interesting to see where they all fit.
Lots of medium talls like Wilkie, Coffield, Battle, Highmore probably all 191 - 193cm.

Yep, we have a surplus of half back flankers but can’t adequately fill all the key positions.

From ZERO HANGAR - can't validate its legitimacy...

St Kilda’s Ben Long to come under scrutiny from MRO after incident with Errol Gulden
The hard-nut Saint could once again find himself in hot water with the Match Review Officer.

St Kilda utility Ben Long is facing a nervous wait after being reported for rough conduct on Sydney's Errol Gulden in the final quarter of yesterday's match.

The fringe Saint finds himself in quite a familiar position, staring down the barrel of a third suspension since the 2020 season.

Long has been struggling to find himself a spot in the St Kilda side all year, playing different positions and different roles as Brett Ratten tries to find a position where he can flourish.

However, he had his best game of the season on Sunday, collecting 27 disposals and 17 marks at 96% efficiency off the half-back flank, although could lose a starting spot in Round 1 next year due to a potentially inoming suspension.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Long was reported by umpire Alex Whetton for rough conduct on Gulden.

Judging by the incident, MRO Michael Christian could deem the contact as careless conduct, high contact and high/medium impact, which would result in either a one or two-match ban.

This would add to Long's history of reports and suspensions, starting from his three-week ban in 2020 for his bump on Fremantle big man Sean Darcy, and his bump on Bulldogs Jack Macrae in the 2020 elimination final, which resulted in him missing the Saints' crucial semi-final match with Richmond.

The Saints now face a nervous wait as the MRO decides if the incident is worthy of a suspension.

Have always been a fan of Long because the hardness he brings to our team opponents looking ovwr their shoulder when playing on him.
However some on here have called for him to be dropped or traded .
BOOM BOOM

Then perhaps he should have reported the bloke that was focussed on assaulting Long for punching the ball. Is it too late to review that, or is the fact he was reacting for an infringement that didn't happen, excuse his violent reaction.

Say it isn’t so!
This does not sit at all well with the conspiracy narrative that the Saints player will be suspended.

From AFL.com

Incident explained:

The match day report laid against St Kilda’s Ben Long for striking Sydney Swans’ Sam Wicks in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the MRO that Long, despite the fact he plays for St Kilda, the Umpiring Association's continued bias against the Saints and the AFL's desire to drive down this perennial under achieving club, following hours of deliberation and attempt to nail the hapless Saint he made a genuine attempt to spoil and that his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.
