Whether it's Riewoldt, or Gilbert or whoever and/or loss of draft picks.

It WILL happen.
The existing 16 clubs will be forced to make sacrifices for "the greater good".

Perhaps when that hits home, some of the apologists for our board might just realise that the board should actually be representing their members views on this.

lets have a look back then who did we lose when the swans emerged ? what about when the eagles and the bears came along who did we sacrifice then when freo came they went hard for our players but did any of them go ? what about port who jumped ship to go there ?? at this stage i understand the fearof the footy fans but lets get real here its nodifferant to say essendon chasing one of our players when the come to the end of their contracts

Well the Swans were "simply" relocated with some flimsy link to South Melbourne.

I do remember all clubs had to submit a list of names when the Bears started up.

For the other clubs, I believe they were granted preferential zones, and preferential draft picks.

This all means that the quality of the competition is diluted.
The chances of winning a premiership are diluted.
And it doesn't address the long term issues of North, Bulldogs and Melb remaining viable.

Obviously the current club presidents have been offered a share of the licence fees.
And blinded by dollars they have dropped their strides and assumed a stooped position.

Short term benefit.
Long term PAIN !!!!

Att: RECRUITING STAFF

The new franchises need to be taken into consideration before drafting kids from Qld or NSW over the next few years !!

After thinking about whether Nick Riewoldt would choose to go to the Gold Coast when the new team is formed, I suddenly realised - he does not have a choice.
It is simply unacceptable to the AFL for Riewoldt not to become a player and captain of the Gold Coast team. :( :( :(

When the AFL forms a team on the Gold Coast that team needs a headline player, someone who is seen to be a local boy.
Someone who can be used to market the new club.
Someone with a high football profile to shake the hands of prospective sponsors before they part with their millions.
We know, and the AFL knows the name of that player - Nick Riewoldt

The AFL will make it happen.
First they will do all in their power to tempt Riewoldt to the Gold Coast.
They will give Gold Coast a salary cap to pay him 2 million a year.
If that is not sufficient they can always exclude an experienced player from the salary cap as the Gold Coast will have no veteran players.
Make that 5 million a year.
If he still won't go, then Gold Coast will be given a compulsory pick of any player from any club.
That club may receive a priority No 1 draft pick as compensation but he will go.

St Klida FC must face the reality now.
They must plan for the departure of Riewoldt no matter how strong his loyalty is to the club.
St Kilda FC must come up with a plan that will deliver the maximum compensation that can be extracted from the AFL.
Us, St Kilda fans need to face up to the reality - he must go to the Gold Coast.
Does this also mean that Lenny Hayes will be a similar target of the 2nd Sydney franchise? !!

Doubt it, he'd be 31 by then wouldn't he?

agree enrico. but like the board of every other club ours has rolled over and disregarded what i believe is a strong aversion to the idea of 18 teams among a majority of fans.

so be it. i don't like it but i can live with it.

there is actually something to be said for a 20-team competition and two divisions.

this would solve many of the problems regarding the existing hopelessly compromised draw as each club would play each other twice in a 20-match home and away round.

the winner of each division would then play off for the premiership.

it might work okay but to my mind it kind of waters down a club's importance and chances of tasting ultimate glory. it used to feel special belonging to a club, but now we're just one of 18 or 20.

with a bit of luck we'll end up in division one and carlton, collingwood and essendon will be consigned to division two.

The AFL would have thought of the benefits of getting Riewoldt to the Gold Coast ...

It would be made a whole lot easier if he had won a flag at the Saints. A lot easier.

Solution?

Pretty clear to me Mr. Demetriou  :)

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

spot on.

I think we'll all go totally insane if there is no flag by 2010.

Players such as Roo know this, Lyon knows it also, and we are surely now due.

Pavlich and Buckley haven't/didn't go back to SA,I don't see why Riewoldt would either.

Can see it happening, but believe we'll be amply rewarded. Roo will be on his last contract, and hopefully we can reload with some quality youngsters. That being said, I'd be more than happy to allow the man see out his playing days in the red, black and white. Gilbert and Armo shoiuld be the big concerns IMO.

Roo was born in Tassie so he will join the Tassie Teatotallers AFL team in 2016. I hope Dimwit doesn't make him go to the Darwin Derros, the 20th team.

St Kilda's 2 premiership captains are Tassie born. The Doc & Roo.
