i heard the recruitment of pattison was to free rhys up for other duties apart from ruck.

:) apparently he is rated extremely highly as an athlete, both for speed and endurance.
Agree with Plugger.

Ruck or nothing.

I have to say having watched the 100 meter sprint I was blown away. I told my wife he should be put on the wing lol.

No one can out run him over 100 metres. Its obvious. If he doesn't have the stamina that is different but then I don't understand how he can play ruck either. I thought exactly the same as Yipper that he is the next Perovic ... lol.

Both Walsh and Stanley should be played this year IMO.

well, we are looking for leg speed ...

no doubt the club will make an informed judgement on when he's ready and in which role.

How is his ball skills below his knees. A wingman is an onballer. How would he go in packs. Is footy played the same as when Perovic played? He has no hope as an onballer apart from being a ruckman. I would say Mini would be as good in the ruck as Stanley would be as an on baller not including the ruckman.

I would be stunned in Walsh gets a game this year, absolutely stunned.

From what I hear, he is still very much adjusting to the oval ball, and to the fitness requirements of a professional sport.

I am keen to see the Tommy-Gun in action, but I don't think he will play a game in Saints colours until 2011 at the earliest....probably 2012 if he sticks around that long

rooey can play wing. in fact it might be his best position. he's tall.

you're probably right that stanley won't be tried there. i'm just thinking laterally about how we get some more leg speed on the ground.

Firstly there is about 10cm difference in height. Secondly one is a superstar the other hasnt even played a game and thirdly it is not even close to his best position. AA captain as a CHF and 5 B&F winner as a CHF. Might win him a brownlow on the wing but wouldnt help our side. Sorry and Rooy is bar far better below his knees than Rhys at this stage.

How about "pencilled in"?

2 points.. Whose spot was earmarked for Lovett?
And.. Who is most likely to take Lovett's spot?

Bearing in mind Armo will probably take Ball's spot.
I have read most of the replies on here and of those .....

Seems close to the mark, but I would love the Club to give Nick Heyne a decent chance in the NAB series to show his pace, goal kicking, and speckies.....

(all of which Lovett could do)

Yep, Heyne is one whom I'd be interested to see. Quite the competitor from what I've heard.

Guess we'll find out soon enough. :D

Nah, let each & every one of them know that they will need to fight for a spot. I believe that will bring out the best in the best of them, and that is where our improvement will come from !!

That is the most rational common sense view I have heard in a long while. It happened last year and will happen again this year IMO.

From what I saw at Sandy last year, Nick should have a great future with the Saints.

Like I said, the feedback was always good on this kid. I'd expect him to play ahead of the Stanley.

I thought Lovett was the replacement for XC? Either way Heyne or Eddy to help run the ball forward next year.

Heyne was my sentimental favourite of the 2008 draftees. I wonder if he'll beat Tommy Lynch to an AFL debut...

Don't forget that whoever gets a spot has to be able to tackle like a b*stard. That's Saints Footy. Possession might be 9/10ths of the law but it's only 2/5ths of an AFL game.

Straight line running like the 100m sprint is a very different kind of speed to that of a Lovett. Being able to turn, evade, accelerate over the first 10-20m and ball-handle and kick at speed are Lovett's strengths.

Jamie Shanahan was one of the fastest over 100m when he was at the Saints....not exactly who you would think of for bursting from the wing and kicking a goal from the 50m arc.

Rhys will be good and we're pleased he is quick, but no substitute for Lovett.

Nee!
