Interesting that the New Ltd shark pack goes mercilessly after blood in high places (think Christine Nixon and Peter Garett) but lays sole blame for the Storm catastrophe right down the food chain.

Don't forget that GT had a hand in player contracts and the AFL would like nothing better than to destroy his credibility. A new investigation is highly possible.

As well as Peter Temple, local authors Anthony O'Neill and Anson Cameron are known Saints fans. Could be more. What is their genre Waltzing St Kilda? Don't think they have a specific genre, unlike Temple. O'Neill's latest was the satirical crime novel The Unscratchables . Cameron did a book called ...

Interesting Spida Everitt anecdote

A mate of mind reckons he saw a drunken Peter Everitt in a Sydney pub when he was playing for the Swans. Spida was loudly declaring to anyone who would listen: "I don't give a f@#* about the Swans, just like I didn't give a f@#* about the Hawks when I played for them! I'm a Saint and always wil...

Milne has kicked numerous such goals that never get much attention from the general media ... because he's Milne.

So don't expect to see this one on a goal-of-the-year highlight reel, either.

Plenty of stuff from Rioli, Betts, Didak and Davis, though.

My fault -- I meant to write "2010" for the preseason storm.

If memory serves, Dal Santo and Milne were dropped for the 2008 Freo match after performing poorly against Sydney the week before. Back-up, anyone?

StK v. Freo: weird things always happen

1999. Umpire Peter Carey takes a mark from a Freo short pass. (Considering the trend of umpiring that night, he may have briefly forgotten that he wasn't officially playing for Freo.) 2005. Whispers in the Sky. Free kicks rain on Freo during a tight last quarter after GT bagged the umpiring departme...

Malthouse calls Baker a dirty dog

The Pies hierarchy seem to be hiding by a "tit-for-tat" defence; i,e., we were called names and responded in kind. "If you give it, you've gotta take it," said Nick Maxwell. But who in fact started the slanging match? According to Caroline Wilson, Malthouse called Baker a "d...

Rd 4 1993/Rd 3 2010 parallels

In Round 4 1993 the Saints, minus their star full forward Tony Lockett, ventured to the fortress of Victoria Park to face the undefeated Collingwood. The Pies were highly fancied for the flag. The last time the two teams met was in the first week of the previous year's finals, in which St Kilda had ...

Was at that game too. At one point Carey waltzed into an open goal and launched a low flying missile over the top of the cheer squad's heads. It went all the way to the back of level one and rattled a sign in the concourse.

You gotta admire GT's chutpah in constantly carping about the AFL administration. With Channel 9 currently seeking AFL rights for the next period, he'll be lucky to keep his job. Perceived pressure might just make them jittery.

Good summary. I'm also strangely resigned to a 2-3 goal loss (and so will be delighted to have egg on my face). Our record against the Swans ain't spectacular, and I'm worried about our bookends. Fisher is a major loss, and if Lenny doesn't play ...

After the NAB Cup Final (on SEN) Lloyd claimed that the Dogs now equalled the Saints on pressure but their skill level was "phenomenally better" and he couldn't see the Saints beating them this year. To my (partisan) ears it sounded like an inexperienced commentator getting swept up in the...

THE SIX CHANCES OF ANDREW LOVETT St Kilda offers a three-year, million dollar contract to a player with a very chequered past; a player his former club is desperately trying to unload. To secure him, a valuable first-round draft pick is given up. Second chance. Within weeks, player is arrested for ...

The Doggies MIGHT shade us a little in skill, but let's not get carried away (as numerous journos have) on the basis of the NAB cup. Carlton has looked unbeatable at times in recent pre-season campaigns. I'd argue our skill level is underrated. So too our depth. And when we play true Saints Footy, i...

They spent a good deal of last year (on SEN) predicting they would burst the Saints' bubble (first in Rd 6, then Rd 17), and finally proclaiming it was "their year" just before the prelim. The current meme is that "we've been in the last two prelims so this year the flag is all ours!&...

Remember '97? Everyone said Adelaide was gone because Tony Modra got injured. But then Blight threw a guy called Darren Jarman to full forward. Point is, talented midfielders can be hugely damaging if you're prepared to sacrifice their input downfield. I have a feeling it works best in finals, though.
