Maybe it's a public holiday for the players, umpires, officials too?

People happy to take the holiday because it suits them.

There's always footy played on a Friday.
There's always footy played on public holidays

Why would you not play on a Friday that is a public holiday?

Seriously?

Why do you think that AFL is the most attended and watched sport in the land?
It's because punters like us demand that these people work for our enjoyment that the players/officials/etc even have jobs...and very well paid ones at that.

We demanded live footy on TV. We demanded that games be scheduled at different times to allow us to watch all of them live. If those demands were not out there, we'd still be stuck with our six games a week on Saturday afternoon.

I certainly don't think that it is thick or rich that we place those demands on them to play football on a Friday night as per every other Friday during the footy season.
We have no qualms about footy on ANZAC Day (a more sacred day to more Australians as it is non-denominational), Easter Sunday and Queens Birthday. If footy was a summer sport, you could bet your bottom dollar we'd be playing a block-buster on Australia Day.

It is time to give people the choice to watch AFL on Good Friday. Given that Essendon & Collingwood now "own" ANZAC day, a clash between last season's grand finalists on Good Friday would be a great tradition to start.

LLS - St Igmata is a religious troll who has nothing to add to this form bar any debate regarding religion.

He's a nuf nuf.

And you are right. The AFL are clearly out of touch on this matter.

I've got another idea - how about an annual Heaven vs Hell match - Saints vs Demons, if you want that religious touch??

Though you're not giving the players, coaches, officials, stadium staff, carpark attendants, food operators (and the list goes on) a choice....

That being said, I think once AD has left the office, it will get through.

Hey , you stole my idea from the first page of this thread...

It would be even more appropriate seeing that GODdard would be playing.

They are in the entertainment industry. They are there for us.

You choose to be employed in this industry so you need to be prepared to work on weekends and holidays.
As for the stadium staff, carpark attendants, food operators, etc...They are casual staff and I bet there would be NO shortage of people prepared to work on Good Friday for a bit of extra cash!

You calling me a muppet because of potential views I may have which I havnt even outlined in this forum?

Pretty low.

There have been three pages of people declaring their beliefs as well as stating they would like football on GF.

How about you lay your life decisions on here and allow me to critic each and every aspect of your life. I guarantee ill be able to hit them into the park further than you could have ever imagined.

I'm truly sorry (as in yes really) that it seems religion is spoiling the Good Friday holi-day for some on here. Don't worry, I think it's inevitable that you'll get your footy fix. But please, some of the vitriol is excessive.

People need a belief system, a set of principles and values to guide their lives. If you look at the spirit of the teachings (as c/f the sometimes hardline letter-of-the-law interpretations of some devotees), then I think most religions do a pretty damn good job of that.

People ponder questions like how did we get here? Big Bang, Creationism, Evolution, a combination, but whatever, the odds of it having happened by chance have been calculated @ 1010123. So divine overseeing of this is maybe not so silly to believe?
http://www.creationofuniverse.com/html/ ... ium03.html
http://www.science20.com/stars_planets_ ... gin_chance

Many people live very unhappy and victimised lives. Then they die. To me this tradgedy could only make sense if there was an afterlife. I don't see it as pie in the sky or opium of the people stuff. However, sadly I can see how people have misused religious beliefs for these ends. :(

So many bad things in this world get attributed to religious faith, which sadly is probably why so many good people, take such umberage - egs on this thread. But a Muslim work colleague of mine once summed it up best. She said, "These happen despite religion, not because of it."

But ultimately, like my team selections in another thread, I don't know for sure. But neither does anyone else. But for those who think the notion of religion is crap, maybe cut us believers a little slack after all, besides you'll only ever find out for sure, if you are... wrong.

PS: For those of you who aren't completely pissed off and over all of this, next Monday Q&A has George Pell (not my first choice) and Christopher Dawkins. I'm hoping they make it really worthwhile by going at each other with tomatoes at 20 paces.

PPS: I personally can't abide many of those sports than Enrico may be forced to resort to, so maybe I will end up watching the latest Muppet Movie (in between the incense wafting around).

Why?

People who post on SS for the most part have footy as their number 1 religion.

Why should some dude on a cross get in it's way?

It is Richard Dawkins, the evolutionary biologist and author of The God Delusion, who, as always, will make an extremely strong case
(iron clad IMO) for evolution.

He is in Australia to attend the global atheist convention.

It will be worth watching.

If the odds of it having happened by chance have been calculated @ 1010123.
What are the odds of something, who created everything else?

And if there is a god who created man. The god did a terrible job.
Look how people treat each other.
Look how many people over the centuries have suffered for many reasons.
This being people call god, is downright evil.

People should live with certain standards and morals.
Those standards and morals should not come from god, santa claus or the tooth fairy.

I do understand that many years ago when there was little education, religion was a glue that brought communities together.
It was probably necessary back then.
We are now in the twenty first century.
In my opinion, organised religion is not required, and it creates too many wars.

Most of us who read this forum live in Australia.
We have the right to our individual beliefs.
Right or wrong.

Not highly religious myself. but show some respect for those who are.
These days you can't say anything negative about any minority group but open season on Christians.
Tell you what: if I was in charge it would be back to 1970's on Good Friday/Christmas day(no casino, poker machines, pubs etc)
Surely 2 days of the year is not such a great sacrifice, whether we are religious or not our whole civilization is based on Christianity.

One calculation is that it's a 67% likelihood that God exists.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/200 ... cation.uk1

If you fancy a punt, then Irish bookmakers PaddyPower are offering 4-1 that God exists.

I think it's not fair to blame God for human behaviour. We are a marvellous creation, but being human and hence fallible, we are capable of incredible good (St Kilda supporters), and also unfortunately incredible bad (Collingwood cheersquad). It's the concept of free will - so God doesn't force anyone to do anything - it's a choice/free will.
People should live with certain standards and morals.
Those standards and morals should not come from god, santa claus or the tooth fairy.
Those standards have to come from somewhere. And I reckon if you read the spirit of the teaching of any of the great religions, then you get a pretty damn good guide. What one then does is up to the individual...

Agreed. Despite some posters on this thread expressing their concerns for the sanity of people who do try to adhere to a faith, I haven't read a single post that would disagree with that right. :)

yes fingers, I used to do that, but not any more.

I dont believe in any manmade doctrineaire religion, with scornful, vengeful, jealous vindictive god.

It is just so the power of the church (whichever it is) can control the masses with fear and anxiety.

But as Stephen Hawkin once pondered " The Universe is so vast and complex, why go to all the bother of existing at all"

Well without getting to hippie, we are all part of the universe, every atom in us began in a star. the gold wedding ring on my finger was once part of a stars supernova (the only place the chemical reactions occur for gold to be created) and consciousness and intelligence is part of that universe.

So maybe WE are the reason the universe bothers to exist. We are part of the universe physically and consciously.

Oh and as i said, I am not a christian or believe in a doctrined god, but if you become aware and awake and understand the meaning of many of the quotes uttered by Jesus, it all has to do with lifeforce, and consciousness, and what we are. Likewise the Buddha. It is about awakening and lifeforce.

So in essence one day without footy is a good thing. It evokes discussion, it raises questions, and it may actually begin some on the path to reconciliation, and awareness and less of an egoic existence.

peace.
