Scott was one of the players who "gifted" Dermott an extra flag in 1991. No wonder he thinks well of him.

The value of a contract extension for Scott is not to say great job but to show that the board understands where we are at and allows the coach to make long term decisions that will adversely effect us in the now with out feeling the need to protect his own back. It's an attitude that will help reconstruct us like it has at the swans.

The Swans are not a jumpy club and seem to work to long term plans like Essendon were always good at. Understanding that the cycle is like the stock or housing market and taking a long term view will make us better off for a little pain now.

But what happens if the club then realsie he isnt a good coach half way through next year? You need good players to make finals but you also need a good coach to improve a side other Neeld would still be at melbourne. If SW is a good coach he will trust his ability to coach long term and wont just do a short term fix to keep his job. The club wouldnt let him for a start.

Well after this long I think they will know what he's about, I doubt he can really disappoint them with team performance and he seems to have a rapport with the players. I would imagine they will see that for the next couple of years we will struggle and a guy who is driven to develop kids is probably ideal.

He might not be a great coach long term but he might be a great coach for right now. Perhaps if you look at a guy like Dean Bailey who seemed to be just going but developing a bonded club but who got ousted because of an impatient board. Maybe just biting the bullet and waiting a couple of years to give his era a chance to show something might work better.

Would like to see some emotion at times. Yeah he may be calm and collected but would rather see some mongrel occasionally like the Scott brothers and Clarko - bang a window, smash a door would show mme he's got some passion and fire!
