i think some are looking at these matchups on paper, and not on actual form

Buddy would slaughter Gilbert, he is in bad form, plus he is no key defender

there two best forwards = Buddy and Roughead

our two best backmen = Max and Sam

its simple, i'd play Max on Roughie, Sam on Buddy, and if it aint working, swap them around

get phsyical with them, harrass them, and cut off the delivery, and thats our best chance of stopping Hawthorn

Will slaughter Gilbert. Even Blake would do a better job coz he has the tank to run.

I got faith in you. i know you havent had a great year but here is your chance to turn it around. if u are getting killed ill move max on to him. but you are first choice. so get ready.

Max on Williams (dont let him get a sniff)
Gilbert on Buddy (Run and spoil all day)
Sam Fisher on Roughhead (Run off him on the rebound/counter attack)
Lock it in Eddie.

Buddy is in rare form.

Gilbert still hasn't captured his form from last season.

I wouldn't mind giving blake a run on Buddy

then can switch someone else later on.

blake is strong, focused, and has a massive engine.

Yes I know buddy has far far more talent, but he can also be undisciplined as well.

next option would be max, if not the first option.

f.ebola is a gorrilla and max had him covered the whole game.

Im not sure its tank with Buddy...more burst speed/agility at 6f10... .....have to cut supply.

We ended up using Gram last time cause noone had the speed to go with him......and he still had 20 shots on goal...thank god he kicks like Richo at times...whoever plays him will need help dropping back AND we must be mindful of Roughead..

Just watched the Hawks-Swans replay - the agility, football smarts, pace, strength and balance of Franklin is too much for Blake and Gilbert.

Sam Fisher is our best bet, even if he historically isn't a great man-on-man defender. I think his positional play has improved a little bit and he's a slightly better spoiler, too.

e.g. Gilbert.

It's not like Gilbert isn't putting in his efforts defensively. He was mismatched against Eddiebetts, and managed to keep with his speed and agility for most of the game.

No doubt in my mind that Gilbert would be up to the challenge of taking Franklin first up. There's always Plans B, C, and D should it start to get ugly.

Id lean toward Fisher but gee we lose some defensive run.....Hawthorn get a double win there:

1. A defender NOT renowned for his spoiling
2. Fisher on Buddy close to goal....

I think Max is still the man with help from Fisher/Goddard even should he drop back there....

My choice too.

Reasons

Max has the closing speed for Buddies pace. Blake does not.

Buddy has an achilles heel mentatlity which can be exploitred...like Fev. Max is good at "cracking" nuts. Blake by contrast is too "nice".

So Blake on Roughead.

Also we need Sam's attack and being part of our midfield rotation.

A "free" Sam also gives the Hawks something to worry about.

Dont be surprised if Gwilt gets given a job here...on Roughead.

Seriously.

I know he had a howler on Friday....

I don't mind Fisher in the contests, but the good forwards tend to get away from him on the lead. In our first match with the Hawks last year Franklin kicked 1.5 on Fisher with no Max to play on him.

I think we start with Max because other than the skills, we play our best defender on their best forward. If they move him up the ground, we can go with a Fisher or a Gilbert for athleticism (Max is at his best when he doesn't get dragged up the ground)... but I recall Neil Craig being very successful last year covering Franklin with Mattner for athleticism and getting numbers back and giving Buddy nightmares.

Whoever it is, I think it's going to be crucial that the defenders play as a unit, i.e. Fisher getting involved in the marking duels. Franklin has put the entire league on notice this year that the only guy who can generally beat Franklin is Franklin.

well thats the point of my post. Gilbert IS in bad form. So what do we do? shrug our shoulders and hope he gets struck down by a bolt of lightning from the "form" gods. im suggesting we throw a challenge at him. i give him an opportunity and really make a big thing about it.

cant just sit around hoping gilbert recovers his "form" let him run around aimlessly.

if it looks bad at quarter time we can make the switch to max
same old same old from gilbert. another shocker.
same old do nothing attitude from RL. Same old hope and wishful thinking. Same lack of initiative. same crap match -ups from RL.

Bam - I think it was Massie and you forgot what Buddy did to him in the return match (Finals)

Has to be Blake - Maxie much better closer to goal and we need to try and keep Sam free.

I'd give Sam a go. We don't have any 6ft 6 backman to match Buddy.

max should be the first option for buddy.
his timing of spoiling the player on the lead is perfect.

blake should go to roughy, free up fisher.
gilbo could go to mark williams

if buddy wants to drag max up the ground, let him, if he's up the ground, he isnt scoring, so job done.

Gram a liability that far back, Dempster Gwilt not agile enough IMO. If anyone had a chance of coming into the side this week it may be Geary to take Rioli, otherwise Gilbert took Betts so he may be ear marked for these types of players?

No, I haven't forgotten. What I was alluding to were the circumstances in which a Gilbert/Franklin matchup might make sense.

Some of the reason people are keen for the matchup is that IIRC they've played on each other at VFL level a couple of times.

Suffice to say in the last 24 months, Franklin's development has outstripped just about anyone elses. Much as I love Maxie, if it's 1 on 1, you'd back Franklin.

I don't mind the Blake matchup of Franklin moves up the ground, one of the things Blake's got going for him is the leap that let him compete in ruck duels, and he's agile enough to have played on some very good mids, so that could be interesting... what he lacks is the closing speed that's made Hudghton so incredibly effective at getting forward to try and take chest marks when they should use their hands.

If the guys help each other out, then we ought be one of the tougher backlines to penetrate for their keys, but we've seen before that if they don't help each other out, Brown and Bradshaw had no problems ripping us apart.

sam played on him when both were first/second year players in the VFL two years go. He has the tank and spoiling ability to go with him. Struggled with playing on the smaller forward last week but I think that the coaching group is willing to suffer short term pain for long term flexibility (see max playing tall and short).

The two things that have let sam down in the past few weeks has

1. tackling, not getting low enough and giving away frees (see gwilt friday night as well)

2. disposal. His kicking is back to his rugby best.

By playing tight to buddy there is no reason he can't keep him under 5 goals.

I agree with max on williams. Fits him perfectly and these are the types of forwards who we tend to get beaten by.

I think blake is playing well enough as a CHB to get roughhead. Roughie is a kosi type who likes to break packs apart and thus you look to keep yourself in the body contest and spoil late.

Who I'm worried about along with buddy is rioli, the kid is class and is due. As we saw on friday night the likes of a betts can turn the opposition on if we don't have a stopper and god we miss a match fit baker and attard.

I agree with playing Blake on him

People say he is playing his best footy- i am sure this form has continuted for the last 1 and a half seasons and is almost our most consistant

Play Blake on him or get willing to lose our run!
