I like to go with what sounds legitmate. Mon-tag-nah just sounds crude and uncultured. If Joey suits for people saying it that way, it seems as though he has given up on ignorant "strayans" mispronouncing his name. I also get my last name mispronounced a lot and most of the time I just let it slide, so I know where he is coming from.Batnoe wrote:Sainternist wrote:he's a true blue 'strayan bloke. but i will still say "mon-tan-yah" because i'm a stubborn bastard.
So do you say Ree wolt or Ree Volt?
Roo prefers the pronounciation of REEVOLT...
so, because you think it is Ree wolt you will still call him that or call him the way his name should be pronounced?
Like the name Grant- some Grants like theirs pronounced Gr -ant
Others like Gr aaaaaaaant
So what is right? usually the way they like to call themselves!!
Mon tag na likes that so call him Mon tag na
Geezus
Riewoldt I pronounce Ree-volt because it's a german name and the "W" is pronounced like a "V" e.g. famous film director Werner Herzog - his first name is pronounced Ver-na.

Most people and commentators are pronouncing it "Mon-tag-nah", but I'm pretty sure it's an Italian name, therefore you the "g" would be softened when saying it e.g. lasagne is pronounced "la-san-yah". So it would be pronounced "Mon-tan-yah", am I right?
Joey pronounces it and prefers Montagna.
His nonna (which he said on the footy show) and the correct Italian pronunciation is Mon-tan-ya.
Having an italian surname myself - Dont really bother me how people pronounce my name - as long as it is relatively close to the mark.

I can't help but say Mon-tan-ya but like him I have Anglosized (is that a word?) my surname which is Dutch.
What's even more weird is that my two brothers pronounce our surname differently to me, but one of my brothers pronounces it the traditional way as do my parents.
Because I played a lot of sport, my nickname was basically my surname (the way I pronounce it) with a "y" on the end. Even my friends' kids have been trained to call my by that name, yet my parents and brothers still freak out when they hear that!
My doctor, who is German, pronounces it correctly and loves to say it out loud to stir me up.

I say do his whole family a favour and call him Mon-tan-ya.Spinner wrote:Sainternist wrote:I know this may be a little trivial, but can anyone clarify what the pronunciation for Joey's last name is? Anybody know how he himself pronounces it?

I'll never bring myself to say la-sag-na, tag-liatelli, Sil-vag-ni, etc, even if the majority go that way.
(And Joey's only a minority of one!)

Yeah, anglicized is a word. And the bad commentators and the plebs are anglicizing Monty's last name when they say Mon-tag-na haha...Milan Faletic wrote:I can't help but say Mon-tan-ya but like him I have Anglosized (is that a word?) my surname which is Dutch.

Are you saying Joey is a pleb, because he was the one who wanted the commentators to call him Mon-tag-na...Sainternist wrote:Yeah, anglicized is a word. And were you wearing your St K Baseball jacket on Fri night?

Not saying Joey is a pleb, but he may have been plebicized in this regard by his peers, who can't pronounce his name properly.Milan Faletic wrote:

And no, I wasn't at Friday's game. I can, however, think of three people who may have been wearing one of those jackets that attend St.Kilda footy games regularly. One of them is Kaz Cooke's husband. Oh jeez, now I'm name dropping haha... Don't actually own one of those letterman jackets. The club phased them out a couple of years before I started playing for them. They're great jackets though.
Terrific result! Yet another clean sheet for Kelvin Davies. But those 10 points deducted by the league before the season could really come in handy right nowsainter35 wrote:1-0Sainternist wrote:Most definitely, mate. Well, if Nonna Montan-ya doesn't get with the program and change her name to Nanna Montag-na, she can get back on the boat.Milton66 wrote:Never mess with Nonna... that is sacrosanct, K.SainterK wrote:He apologised to his Nonna when he asked for the Aussie versionMunga wrote:The name is pronounced Mon tan ya (Italian)

I think I'll call him Hannah from now on.
